sleep paralysis is literal paralysis. You try to move with all the strength you can muster but you just can't... no matter how hard you try to get up and move you just can't. It also feels like you can't breathe. It is very frightening when you are not expecting it.

For me, the longest spontaneous sleep paralysis lasted was 10 seconds and twice was accompanied by visual hallucinations aftewards, also known as waking dreams.
