False Awakening was 9 HOURS LONG???

omg! Please help? Okay well, I was going to sleep around 10:30PM,
and Sadly, I Haven't gone to sleep, then I got distracted. I closed
my Eyes for about 10 minutes, and when I opened them I couldn't go back to sleep. I looked over at my Window, and my Home-made-paper-animal.
(it's just a craft I did for fun) I looked at it again and watched as It's head fell off the Window area. I sighed thinking that I would hot glue it back tommorow. I was thinking about Lucid Dreaming in Bed and I looked out the window to see Sunrise. (WTF? I whispered, It's been 9 hours??? Holy Crap!
I said as I ran over to my mirror in the bathroom, looking at the bags under my Eyes. I didn't get any sleep I murmered, so I headed back to bed even though it was 6:00AM, and I awoke to my reletive Waking me up for Church.
I complained to her that I didn't get enough sleep, But she said that I looked fine, and I ran to the mirror seeing that there was no bags under my eyes. I wen't to church and came back home. I wen't upstairs to my room and looked at the window, I noticed something. My home-made-paper-animal...was the same and the Head was not fallen off.
      Q#WAS THIS A FALSE AWAKENING?
      Q#HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS?
Q#WERE WAS MY MISTAKE THAT CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN?

hi! sounds quite interesting however I don't fully understand- are you implying that you didn't sleep the entire night (or indeed had an FA that lasted the entire night) as in 9 hours? please describe what happened in more detail.

So, basically, during those 10 minutes that you closed your eyes you fell asleep. You did not just lay there in a dream for 9 hrs. You slept like you normally would. There is no telling how much time passed between the time you closed your eyes for those 10 minutes and when you opened your eyes and found your self in the dream. It also sounds like it was the last dream you had before you woke up for real.

WAS THIS A FALSE AWAKENING? yes. After trying to WILD for several days this happened to me. I was laying in bed and closed my eyes to do a WILD. What seemed like 5 minutes passed and I opened my eyes. I was disappointed because i thought i had failed. Luckily I had the presence of mind to do a reality check and i found i was dreaming.

HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS? It is not something that needs to be prevented. Start doing reality checks whenever you wake up. That way a false awakening will lead to a lucid dream.

WERE WAS MY MISTAKE THAT CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN? You didn't make any mistakes, a false awakening just happens sometimes and is a great way to become lucid.

We sleep in periods or cycles of about one and an half hour (or 90 minutes) through out the whole night. After every period we arouse briefly from a REM-dream.

Usually we don't remember these micro-awakenings through out the night since they are so brief and we don't gain consciousness fully.

This means that a false awakening can not last physically longer than that 90 minutes of one sleep cycle. So you always wake up eventually.

Sometimes we seem to see dreams that last longer (hours, days or years) but this is because of the same affect that movies tell of time span of years. Our mind will cut a scene like in a film. For example "Now I'm a kid 13 years old. (...cut...) Now I'm adult 23 years old". We interpret this as ten years have passed while it all happened in an eye blink.

weird. the weirdest dreams I've had is where I've gone to sleep in my bed and woken up multiple times BACK in the same bed- but lucid, thinking i was awake, playing out my whole day, going to sleep and waking up again, and again in a lucid state, so finally when i woke up in reality i had to laugh lol.
Lucid dreams: Every day in the middle of the day after i go to school then come back and sleep.
