Hey guys, im 16 and haven't dreamt for quite a while but when i was younger i usually had a nightmare a night.

Anyway when i was laying in bed trying to get to sleep i used to hear my heartbeat but instead it was coming from my head, it was a small throbbing usually in the front right side of my head( i am left handed). It was real, as in i could put my hand to my hand and could feel it like how you can feel your pulse in your wrist although this seemed much more clearer and powerful. IT didn't used to scare me that a small part of my head throbbed but it did scare em because i knew i was going to have a nightmare, usually the louder and more powerful it throbbed the worse the nightmare would be. Interestingly im not sure if it was my heart beat because if i put my hand to my chest i wouldnt feel this large throbbing and the thorbbing in my head wasnt exactly fast or anything, just strange i guess, any thoughts?

The nightmares come because you think they will. Your fear fuels them. You can only get rid of them by defeating Fear.

      You mean regular dreams?
Actually, you dream every single night.

I suppose but some nights it wasnt there and some nights it was. I wouldn't be thinking about nightmares but when i felt it i knew i would have one.

It's similar to panic disorder. Once you've had a panic attack, the fear of having a panic attack causes another panic attack. Your body gets too excited and basically you self-induce a nightmare. I know exactly what you mean by the throbbing and stuff though - I used to get random pulses and throbs at random places in my body when I was worried about something.

Just learning to relax and forget about what scares you is the best solution.

When did it start? Did it happen a few times and you noticed a pattern, or did you know the first time it happened that it meant you were going to have a nightmare>

No the first time it happened i had no idea what it was, i just thought it was some weird painless headache and just tried to ignore it and go to sleep which was pretty easy as its very noticable but didnt stop me from sleeping. That night a had a nigtmare, thought nothing of it and didnt have the throbbing or a nightmare the next day. The next day i got it again, still didnt think anything of it, had nightmare. I still didnt really see any connect until it happended around three more times. That's when it was like a consious dream sign for me, that i was going to have a nightmare that night. I did a little preparation sometimes when i had it, i didnt know it was called Lucidity trhen but i tried to focus before going to sleep on either having a good dream or making sure i realise its a ightmare when it starts so i can try to make more thought out decision on how i hide from the monster or i just dont open any scary doors.

After a while i did work out a method. As soon as the dream started a curled into a ball and closed my eyes, sometimes i could feel the breath of the monster standing right infront of e, but it wasnt looking at it so it was just waiting, after around 10 seconds the dream would just end. Another dream, infact the last time i had any monster/ zombie or any bad creature related dream i turned around to the monster( it was a very classic red demon, which i had never dreamt about anything really along those lines before0 and said to it that this isnt my house, i was asleep in my bed, this isn't happening and so you don't exist...

It stood there for like 3 seconds staring at me and then screamed very loudly and kind of exploded into water, then the dream ended. Since that time i have never dreamt about monsters.

your title says it all... if you "know" your going to have a nightmare b4 u go to bed, obviously your mind will create 1 for you. Instead, when your head throbs, "know" your going to have a lucid =D.
