Enlightenment is knowing what is, and accepting it into your life.
To find enlightenment quickly, you should have a terrible thirst for it.
      You must become a "Seeker"
      Then your journey begins.
Once you have found the true way of things, you will be enlightened.
Then the weight on your shoulders falls off, and enlightenment is no longer important.
The meaning of your life will become clear.
Fears will start to dissolve away.
Stress will no longer be a part of your life.
You will start to see why many people in this world are so sad.
Many friends, and family will notice a change in you, and you will see a change in them.
Then you will realise that enlightenment can not be attained, but only realised.
      Quite simple really.

My guesses as more somebody claims to have it as less he truly has it.
Except of course men like christ who talked about it and then of course got crossed.
      Which leads again to silence.
      So don't worry so much.
See what did i told you.
      The guy has nothing.
      not even a clue

This is the way it is for most! Every so often people become enlightened without ever seeking it.

It is as if you know it personally!

      Nice to meet you TiredPhil!
And what of a person who recognises the fact that another "may" have glimpsed a small part of enlightenment.

      Glad to meet you too.

Enlighten happened to me at 15. The immediate DISAPPOINTMENT was that my habits were unaffected. I was lazy before enlightenment and that didn't change. So I couldn't give myself to my Master.

There was no doubt that "it" had happened.

I have no "direct" memory of the event. "It" don't fit into memory banks. But I remember what I said to myself (thought) and what I said to mum and I remember what I did.

1 - There "initially" was no me or myself or I. No Ego.

2 - subtly but totally merged with everyone and everything for about a two mile radius (or sphere). More than clearvoyant, telepathic etc because being merged means that psychicness is irrelevant.

3 - And the biggest Mind-Twisted was ... I had never known any other state. And I had never, ever suffered.

The ego (me) gradually woke-up. A deeply saddening thing to have happen. I had no way of stopping the ego (me) waking-up.

The radius of pure (merged) consciousness got smaller and smaller till it was as tiny and isolated as before the enlightenment.

My deep, deep heart-wrenching desire is to die. "I" am only a tiny, tiny ego shell. Suicide won't cut it. That does not liberate the consciousness.

Don't ask me any questions. I ain't got no answers.

Many people treat enlightenment like some kind of qualification you can obtain. Of course, everyone would scoff at the notion of 'enlightenment as a qualification' but the way most ppl talk about it, it sounds like something you achieve:
Enlightenment is: knowing yourself, loving yourself, loving the world, the absence of suffering, etc. In fact, we can generalise it as "enlightenment is... [an enduring goal one slowly advances on and (if we're lucky/hardworking) achieves.]"

I see at least 3 problems with this:
      1. I doubt any human has ever stood in any kind of permanent relation to anything (no one is always anything); give the Buddha a 9 to 5 job, a wife and a couple of kids and let's see how 'enlightened' he is then...
      2. It inevitably implies something like a ranking system which seems weird to me; what does it mean to be 'half enlightened' or 'closer to enlightenment than someone else'?
      3. I think few ppl would ever dream of actually calling themselves enlightened, no matter how much meditation/reflection/whatever they do, so is it even a real thing or just an ambiguous metaphysical/religious concept with no substance?

I don't see any way of avoiding these problems so I think we should scrap the whole thing. Instead, if we mean someone knows herself well, then that's what we say. If we mean someone is in a state of harmony (at the moment), then we say that. We shouldn't try and force an absolute value (enlightenment level 5... with honours!) where it doesn't belong.

Debra, I know people who can offer good guidance if you would like. What you describe is a spiritual experience that accompanies seeing that you have no self. These experiences are transient and then followed by "the dark night of the soul". Sounds like you are still in the dark night. I was a dark night yogi for most of my adult life. I met a group of people online that helped me out. Once you see that there is no self you cannot 'unsee' it. Send me a private message if you would like contact information.

After I read your post (#32) and PMed you I put, "The dark night of the soul yogi" into the YouTube search bar. I listened to some, and these two helped me a lot:

Kundalini and the Dark Night of the Soul Part 1

Kundalini and the Dark Night of the Soul Part 1 with chrism - YouTube
      (6:29)

Ram Dash - Dark night of the soul

Ram Dass - Dark night of the soul - YouTube
      (8:08)

      I don't do any practices.
