To keep your filthy balls/pussy and asshole off of peoples furniture and stuff. Also, even if you don't need to keep warm, you need protection from environment (brush, snakes, etc). Even Natives wore clothing most of the time when they didn't have too.

Yea, hair is kinda gross, except on the scalp

The only hair I have on my body is um...my legs and my underarms, if it were up to me there wouldn't be any hair follicles on my body lol...

I reckon it's peer pressure too. I was not embaressed about nakedness until I saw that other people were. But it is a pretty strong "instinct" so there may be another explanation.

Strangely enough once we became hairless pubic hair remained. What use would this be if we were wearing clothes?

Pubic hair is a universal joke.

Pubic hair remains to trap scent.

Seriously I love guys who keep their body hair under control, i.e. trimming things. Oh man, props for them.

Ah, I see. There are milions of other evolutionary mishaps I would also like explaining and you seemed to floor this one pretty easily, but that would be off topic.

Now that I think aboot it, peer pressure is probably strong enough by itself. Young children appear to run around nude without any hesitation and probably the only reason we cover up when exposed is because it's hard wired into our heads by TV and other people at an early age. Personally, I learned it from Ed, Edd and Eddy if I can trust my memory.

I mean we have pretty much zero protection from the elements. Even on a nice day, we'd all get skin cancer naked. There's no way around it, IMO.

      Basically these couple things:

      1. It's really f***ing cold outside, or hot.

      2. Essentially we are afraid of our own primal instincts, and that fear has permeated culture, religion and government.

Even your arms? I know some guys who shave their arms to show off their tats. Its really uncomfortable to stand too close to their stubbly sandpaper arms when you're packed in at the bar. What do you do about arm and chest stubble?

Let's not forget that not every culture wears clothes. It's a purely cultural thing. Clothes are also useful in many conditions, help keep things sanitary, and allow us to show off. For cleanliness reasons I think it's smart to cover our nether region, but I would like to see the taboo against women going topless in public go away.

It's image for sure. With our clothes, we alert others to our societal standing and share our sense of style (or lack thereof) with the world. Obviously clothing protects you from the cold and other environmental things too, but it's mainly a form of self-defining expression, expression that goes beyond the spots and stripes of animal pelts.

Also they keep your sweaty a-hole off my couch!

There are a lot of visuals from this thread I'd rather forget.

My theory is that as humans, who had lost their fur in the tropics (for reasons constantly argued about), travelled to colder climates, they eventually added clothing with a functional addition of warmth. There had already been clothing to decorate, as well as, more likely even earlier, earlier, aid in carrying objects and protect vulnerable areas (not merely the pubic region, but also areas such as the neck, for example, which when exposed indicate weakness). As more and more clothing was worn for colder and colder climates, eventually it became necessary to only remove some articles of clothing in an intimate situation, indoors, where it was warmer. This caused the removal of clothing to indicate an air of intimacy or passion, which later we "retconned" to include other reasoins, such as morality, or, likely as a result of clothing indicating status from early in the develpoment of clothes, from peer pressure. Many other reasons have since been added, but it is my personal opinion that this reason was foremost in thye current discussion of why clothes are found to be necessary in most cultures, even when temperature doe not require the donning of attire.

First, it was the weather. Then vanity. Then status. And then nobody went around naked for so long, it became taboo, mostly for religion's benefit, I guess.

You forget, though, that are many people in the world that still go around naked. They, too, have concepts of modesty, but don't view their bodies as something imoral.
And, of course, they all live in warm places...

I did not forget. Didn;t I... No, I did not mention that. Still, I did say most cultures, and not all. Ah well. Point understood.

      Yay!

This has nothing to do with the question, but I just wanted to say that I'm happy that I've seen someone that plays The World Ends With You, NeoSioType! I love that game....
