      feeling happy

the more you see, the more you have to feel happy about. its really odd because feeling happy is what makes life worth living right? well its not that easy is it? there can be no happy witout the sad because if there is nothing to be sad about then there is nothing to feel freed from, relieved about, or pleased about, because there would be no contrast. so when bad things happen try to remember that it's part of life. god i so wish i could remember all of this when my computer crashes and when i fail a driving test!

I dont live to be happy. Then my life would suck half the time. I live for the experience of life itslef, which is about the ups and the downs and everythign else. But if it were up to me...neutral state is the best. When Im not happy and Im not sad, and I jsut dont worry about how I feel.

I think trying to be happy and experiencing life is the same thing. I personlly consider being in a neutral state as happy also. Yea your not jumping off the walls or anything but you can relax and not worry about stuff so its not a bad place to be.

i was really happy today because i thought i looked good, and when i see myself again later on i realise i made the image in my head even better through unconcious optimism - the good thing sort of gets better in your head because you want it to!

Just being content is all I want. Everybody tries to make something good out of a bad situation (Is the glass half empty or half full?)

When I'm feeling content I may as well be on top of the world. If nothing is truly bothering me, I'm the happiest person in the world. It's the only way I feel if I'm not sad about something, which doesn't happen too often, and my anger emotion takes a LOT to summon these days. It would have to involve a direct, unreasonable violation of free will towards me or someone I love to bring it out...Trivial stuff doesn't piss me off anymore

      That's pretty much it

Today I was rerouted 3 times in traffic because of construction, one of the times I was forced to wait 5 minutes for a dump truck to slllloooooooowwwwwwwwllllllly back up out of my way, and I also had to sit in traffic for half an hour, which shouldn't have happened, and I just shrugged it off. 3 months ago I would have been flying into a self-contained rage.

Anyone who says anger is out of one's control simply hasn't tried hard enough to control it! Serious events aside, I've learned quite well how to observe this emotion from sort of a third-person perspective and just let it go...

My sadness emotion is pretty much the only negative one which I can't control...For example, a week ago I was sitting with my 10yo cousin and I noticed she looked sort of depressed...When I asked her what was wrong (it wasn't serious, my sister broke a promise to watch her play a game...), I saw the tears start to well up and it just broke my heart...The waterworks started on the spot...Oh well, it made her feel a lot better, I just let her acknowledge how stupid we looked crying over something so silly, and we laughed about it after I told her that my sister didn't mean it and that she probably just forgot, and that was the end of it.
I guess that's one emotion I don't really want to suppress, it would make me feel like I don't care.

edit: Oh and it's spelled "unnecessary"

The mind is such a complex thing. One example I think is that people (most people) need to work to feel a sense of accomplishment.

Bingo gameover. I live for the experience, for the beauty in life that can be found everywhere you look, but is often missed by those who seek only contentment. My values are in this order:

      Freedom

      Beauty

      Truth

I am finding that Freedom, and to a lesser extent Truth conflict with happiness quite a bit. I don't live for happiness, I live to see.

To live just for the experience of living is a good thing, and living to be happy as well but thats all just for you. Live for yourself yeah, but there are millions of other people in this world and if everyone did that then the world would colapse we need to live for the good of others as well, to help, to give and to love. Otherwise what point would there be if no-one else was there to help you when you need it so the same would apply the other way round.
Sorry thats so badly worded but lots of thought about too many things at once make me go weird (ok and again bad wording).
Sweet is love when all is sane
Sweet is death to rid the pain
Pain is death when all is well
Pain is love when all is hell

Kevyboy, very wise...Not many people think this way, it seems. I get more joy out of helping someone else than I do helping myself.

yes! thats it! live to live, be grateful for the experience, enjoy what you've got, and help others do the same so that it's fair and so our world can be happy together and help one another so that it carries on!

i love to help people more than anything, to the point that i worry about others more than i'm told is healthy, and i know i get physically ill when around or talking to someone who's upset or depressed. once i just couldn't handle it, trying to help and not being good enough, i ran away; i regret it, except that i remember that if i had not in fact ditched, i would be miserable and broken... still... however relieved i was afterwards, it is something i wish above all things i'll never do again. living life, doing what i can to help others, following my heart, is what i believe is my purpose in life, and that goes into some religious junk that i've been called heretic over in the past...

meh, it's an entirely different story there, but i agree with the bit of helping others is the greatest thing, and happiness is contentment in life, and keeping a sort of medium, not real ups and downs, happiness and sadness as so many ppl seem to percieve it, is the key to being truthfully happy, forever.

i disagree, hapiness is not what people live for...
i mean, some people live for revenge and are driven soley by hatred.
some live to help others even if it means stripping themselves of hapiness.
others live for the material things in life
      some for money and ambition.

what drives a person is different among everywone. only living for hapiness is like, for lack of a better metaphor, playing a poker game just for the fun of playing, some play for reuputation others for money etc.

yes i agree with the helping others post, without this quality, our society would soon crumble. we are upheld by mutual concern for each other.

hell yeah,i hate anxiety, totally the worst motion of the lot.

I agree Damascus, people live for differnet reasons and I think most of them don't even know what they live for. I would think that many people live for happiness, or the prospect of it, and are willing to adjust their beliefs and disreguard truth in order to achieve it for themselves. Others are willing to disreguard it for themselves in order to achieve it for others. A few are like me and gameover, and don't live life for happiness at all, but for the experience of it.

Stop wrapping yourselves up in this experience mumbo jumbo. There is only one goal which is happiness. Hapiness is just a good emotion. Like laughing or being proud etc... If you are happy by experiencing ups and downs then your still happy but if you were happy all the time your life wouldn't suck because you would be happy. It's not like you can't get bored of being happy or if your happy to much you can start to be sad. I live to experience life too but I want to be happy.Everybody wants to be happy or enlightened. There are no emotions better than happiness. If you experience life for the ups and downs and that satisfies you then you are still happy. It's not like your not happy to experience ups and downs becuase then you wouldn't enjoy it like you say. Does that make any sense...

Pursuing happiness can lead to suffering. If you're always looking for that situation where you can be totally "happy," you'll spend all your time being dissatisfied with the here and now. Maybe the "ups and downs" view also seeks happiness in a sense, but you can draw a distinction between pursuing pleasurable sensations and taking pleasure in whatever comes.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama
