      Pledge of Allegiance News Article

Friendly Atheist » When Children of Atheist Parents Are Forced to Say the Pledge

I'm happy to know they're trying to get the Pledge ruled unconstitutional.

Neat. I personally just skip over the "under god" bit if I'm forced to participate. But really, the entire pledge is ridiculous, along with the concepts of patriotism and nationalism. :/

lul... fortunately we're not ever required to pledge allegiance to her though.

It's really quite amazing that Americans have to make a pledge to their Queen and submit to their God. It's such a weirdly backward place in many ways. There's no way this could even be debatable here... it's wrong and weird.

I used to do that. Now I stand, but I don't put my hand over my heart and I don't say any of it. Tomorrow, I plan to stay sitting.

The pledge doesn't bother me. Though if they announce that the term "under god" is more of a general reference instead of it being a reference to the Christian god, I don't think people would have nearly as many qualms with it (save for the south).

As long as it's been there, I just think it should remain.

Firstly, how on Earth could that change be effected? The current pledge doesn't say Yahweh, it already says 'God'.

Secondly: yeah except it was only added in 1954.

She's the king's wife. Hence why I said we don't have a queen.

You don't have to pledge, I never did. Sit at your desk and read. Why would you want to pledge allegiance to the United States anyway?

Starting in junior high I stopped saying the pledge, and by high school I occasionally would "forget" to stand up.

However the problem with sitting down is that sometimes teachers would pressure the kids sitting to stand up. I can't remember it happening to me, but I have seen it occur.

I went to a private, christian school so I was forced to say the pledge because that was our duty as moral, upright, god-fearing, Americans to do so. Now I just leave out the "Under God" part because I believe it to be unconstitutional and offensive to patriotic non-believers like me.

This happened to me all the time, I remember one kid got in a bunch of trouble over not standing so just stood so I wouldn't have to deal with shit.
157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

Pledge of Allegiance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bellamy's original Pledge read as follows:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
      ...
The United States Congress officially recognized the Pledge as the official national pledge on June 22, 1942.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
      ...
In 1943 the Supreme Court reversed its decision, ruling in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette that public school students are not required to say the Pledge, concluding that "compulsory unification of opinion" violates the First Amendment. In a later opinion, the Court held that students are also not required to stand for the Pledge.
      ...
The phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending §7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942

One builds a nice sturdy cabinet to hold ones precious china and keep it safe

If one puts broken pieces of china in that cabinet ....

Such is not the cabinets fault they are broken

      Let the cabinet fall apart....

      Or even tear it apart...

And all the china will soon be broken

So long as there is even one who holds contempt and hatred in their heart

There are things worth killing and dying for

For if those who have love and compassion in their hearts take no action...

Action moving to preserve and protect such..

Then truly there will not be anything left worth living for...

The road of idealism is lined with fools who ignore the reality of the moment

A reality which sometimes requires what may seem terrible extremes..

This in order to bring things back into balance

Under god was added on June 22, 1954 under FDR. It is the most recent of 4 changes made to the pledge, there should be no reason why it can't be changed a fifth time to remove it.

I used to stand for the pledge, but I never said it. I find it pretty dumb if some kids are FORCED to say it. It's even more dumb if they refuse to say it then get in trouble.
