My stance has long been atheism, though I once adhered to Christianity. My transition from the one to the other wasn't filled with grief, regret, or any sort of strong feelings; it was smooth, as I felt God must be false, gone, or otherwise irrelevant because I didn't feel my prayers were being answered, and it didn't make sense that the world would be as it is were there a God that were otherwise. I didn't put much thought into my stance, nor did I think much about religion or even consider myself an atheist until several years later (I think I was about seven at the time, but I'm unsure) when I started to do a lot of reading of subjects from Christianity, atheism, secularism, religion in general, and even seemingly less related subjects that actually played a big role in strengthening my current stance.

Anyways, I think it substantially more important the mindset and intelligence one holds as well as the principles he adheres to, rather than simply what his religious beliefs are.

I think what you are thinking of is "agnostic..."

One cannot understand Christianity without understanding the influence of the Antichrist, that is, Paul. Now, we can review the Gospels and find that Christ had given 3 warnings of the Antichrist -- that there would be a Wide Way to destruction, that there would be Weeds among the Wheat, and that there would be a Wolf in sheep's clothing. Also, we had the Prophet Simeon declare withg his dying breath that Christ would be contradicted. All of this was answered in Paul with his diabolical doctrines. Luckily, Christ and his teachings have continued to have some bit of influence in Christianity, but the sweeping and overwhelming influence of Paul, especially on the Protestant Churches is such a detriment to Christianity that in many ways Christianity hardly qualifies as a Higher Moral Religion.

So, one should never dismiss all Religion simply because one is troubled by Christianity and its Antichristical Doctrinal Elements... no morally responsible person could not be troubled. One should examine ancient Zoroastrianism that survives best in the Sufi Orders, Hindu Yoga, Mahayana Buddhism, and even the Pagan Wiccan systems.

But if one wants more than a Belief System, but an actual Supernatural Religion, the best thing going these days is Catholic Marianism.... no, not the Paulism of the pedophile Bishops -- that is all secular Clergy and they are little better than protestants. The Marian Catholic Religious Orders, particularly the Orders that trace to the Marianism of the High Middle Ages, are characterized by their Miraculous and Supernatural Saints. Also, there is the matter of the Marian Apparitions -- to name a few, there have been the Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadelupe, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, but there have been a slew of others.
