Studies involving participants who are below the ages of 18 involve a lot more work (such as getting the parent's signature and there might be more restrictions on what you can do to the subjects are well) so unless your topic is specific towards younger demographics (such as studying cognitive functions of elementary students) most research default to must be 18 or older.
