      Wierd #%@$ !

Okay, I'm about as confused as I can get right now
Let's explain this step by step.

      - A week ago I got a new fancy PC case. I rigged it up to the best of my knowledge. It's been running for days without a problem, and has been switched on and off in that time
      - Yesterday I pulled out my PC cable without shutting down
      - Today, I put my PC back in, and it's dead. NOTHING. zilch
      - I open the box, find nothing wrong
      - I take a spare power supply and wire it to the m/board to see if it helps. Nothing.
      - I put the original P/S back and examine the cables from box to M/B.
      - I realise that there is no cable connected for the power switch. I remember that I never connected this originally because it didn't seem necessary for the PC to work at the time!
      - I put the M/B switch cable in... and it starts up. HTF did it start before??

Now that was wierd enough... it gets wierder:

      - As it boots up, nothing comes to my monitor. The LED is flashing, but no visuals.
      - As I look for the monitor cables, the LED switches off
      - I notice that the monitor power cable was disconnected. But the LED was ON!
      - I plug the monitor in, and make this insane, senseless post of ranting.

WTF?? Someone pinch me, cos my other reality checks aren't working!

(Oh, and while trying to post this topic, my router just 'decided' to switch off. Fiddling with the plug brings it back - but nobody had been near the cables on that side of the room while writing all this. Can my day get any stranger?)

Oh, that happens. At my school, if you yank the cable out the back of the monitor (or indeed on camera chargers with LEDs), the LED stays for a longish period after the cable has gone. I can only assume because the LED is working on the residual charge left in the cable or something, and LED's are hardly power hogs.

Uh, this was more than the short period you describe. The cable had been out during the entire time I took my PC apart, and discovered the first wierd oddity
(Because the first thing I did was to check if the cable was okay, by using the monitor's)

Certain power supplies work without power for a while.

I would guess that your computer is haunted and the only cure for that is to get a new one. Ghosts suck, they just mess up everything.

That deserves a pimp slap... arse...

Anyway. Just to RE-CLARIFY... if I unplug my monitor on any normal day, the LED dies within seconds. This particular situation was a matter of several minutes.
My monitor has not been rigged with a soccer-ball sized capacitor or a lithium battery
In addition, there is no big-ass power supply attached to it.

It's just a normal bloody desktop monitor that responds to power like you'd expect it to (normally). It switches off within seconds.

Well, whatever. Let's just go with the "ghost of the computer haunts Placebo in some evil quest to make his LED's spookily light up despite the fact monitors do indeed have alot of power going through them" since that's what you seem to want.

Actually, I just wanted to rant in the senseless banter section about it. I didn't 'WANT' to settle on a half-arsed answer of either sort.
For some reason you think I want to make a point

I have no idea what happened. Not having an answer isn't the end of the world, as some may think...

Or would you have preferred 'Oh, yeah... the capacitors in the monitor must have done it' and ignore the arguments against it?
It seems that's what you wanted ME to just go along with *that* lame brained idea (considering the duration of time it was plugged)

You really want me to lay it out carefully for you?

The 'arguments against it' ('it' being 'the capacitors in the monitor must have done it'') would be :
      1) The monitor does not behave slowly when pulling out the power cable at any other time
      2) There is no reason to expect the monitor to behave slowly when pulling out the power cable, since it has no large capacitors or batteries that would allow it to stay on for over a minute.

What's odd is how you reacted. You:
      1) Tried to lay a logical reason, that turned out to be wrong
      2) Assumed I was pushing a paranormal reason for it
      3) Became patronising

I don't know what caused it, but it was not capacitors, and it was unlikely to be 'ghosts' either.
Unfortunately, I'll likely never know what it was. And I'm happy to live with that.

In any event, since this isn't repeatable, it's probably a waste of time to argue about it.

I apologise for starting a thread that turned out to be another argument on paranormal vs mundane.
That was not my intention, I was just confused at the time and wanted to rant in senseless banter like everyone else does. You'll notice that I seldom use this section.
