I went to a used game store (It wasn't one of those major game stores like Electronics Boutique, but it was pretty great nonetheless) and bought the red Game Boy cartridge we all know as Pokemon Red, along with a Game Link Cable (because none of my friends had any :/). I was pretty excited, to say the least. I didn't bring my Game Boy Advance SP with me, so I had to wait until I arrived at home to play. So I'm in the car for 15 minutes, and when I finally reached my destination, I immediately took off my seat belts, opened the car door, and sprung out of the car. I dashed as fast as I could to the door and opened it. I plugged Pokemon Red into my GBASP, and turned it on. It said 'Game Boy' on the top, but a black bar was at the bottom! Clearly I must not have put it in deep enough, so I turned the Game Boy off, pushed at the cartridge until I heard a click, and turned it on again. This time it was a go.

I turned my full attention at Pokemon Red. The frenzy of buying and playing a new game was shooting through my body, kinda like when you strike your funny bone and your hand tickles. I managed to defeat Brock by using Charmander (it was pretty rough; I had to rely on Growl). I also managed to catch a Pikachu in the Viridian Forest, which I considered pretty lucky. I was heading for Route 4, when my mother yelled from downstairs, "Dinner time!" So I saved the game, and went downstairs for dinner. I had rice: it wasn't too special, but I didn't mind. All I could think about was Pokemon.

When I finally finished my supper, I walked up the stairs and into my room, trying to restrain my excitement. I turned on the Game Boy, expecting to defeat Misty by the end of today. I pressed start, anxiously expecting to continue the journey of STARMIE (yes, that's what I named my character), when my mind was trying to grasp upon a logical explanation as to why there were only two choices I could make, which were 'NEW GAME' and 'OPTIONS'. I was frightened, worried that my game cartridge was defective. I thought to myself, "Maybe I turned the Game Boy off when it said 'Now saving...'" so I started a New Game, brushing away the idea that my Pokemon Red was flawed. This time I chose Squirtle, and played until I arrived at Viridian Forest. I decided that I had to use the restroom, so I saved. However, this time I kept a close look on my screen to reaffirm myself that I sturned the GBASP off at the right moment, and headed for the bathroom door.

I returned from the bathroom, and decided to play some more Pokemon, maybe about 10 minutes more, I thought to myself. I turned it on, and this time I saw the option 'CONTINUE'. So I chose that option without hesitation, and I was controlling the body of STARMIE once more. I defeated a few trainers in the Forest, when suddenly a thought occurred to me to double-check that the last game deletion was just a coincidence. I restarted my Game Boy, and bam! I was back to square one. 'NEW GAME' or 'OPTIONS'. I once again made a new file, but this time, I didn't bother with the character names, and chose RED for myself, and BLUE for my rival. I saved as soon as I found myself in the room upstairs, and restarted Pokemon AGAIN. *sigh* 'NEW GAME' and 'OPTIONS' were the two options once more. This is probably the moment where I got ferociously livid and took my cartridge out and in, out and in, out and in. This didn't help at all, obviously.

Oh well, back to the used game store tomorrow.

I never actually played the games. I just know that pokemon is shitty. Who else wanted to kill that pikachu thing every time it made one of those stupid noises?

What about those stupid pokemon trading cards. They were banned from most schools over here because people kept stealing from their parents to buy them! They were gay too.

The whole pokemon thing is sad. I mean, little weird creatures with magic abilities being carried around in little balls that battle for no real reason? C'mon. It was sad. Admit it.

Bleh, as childish the games really are, I'm strangely addicted to them. I may or may not have a problem.

Oh c'mon! The pokemon games rule, as gay as pokemon is. Especially the old versions, like red, blue (my favourite) and yellow. I've got an iPod nano with iPod linux, which has a gameboy emulator called iBoy. I've got all of the non-colour pokemon games on there. They pwn and they take up 300 kb

Goddamn, did nobody get my reference to Missingno, that fabulous Pokemon Red/Blue* glitch that could totally screw your game up in weird ways? I enjoyed messing around with that glitch.

      * Possibly others. I'm not that sad

I love missingo. Infitnite rare candys Infinite rare nugets
Infinite TM's that teach Fire blast

It's also fun to catch the wheezings and electrodes next to missingo, because they are well over level 100. Once, I tried giving a bunch of rare candies to each of them, and around reaching level 300 they went right back to zero

Oh yeah, and missingo never erased my save file. Although, my games freeze when you put him in the PC and try to take him out You have to release him.

Also, remember, training your pokemon to level 100 makes them more powerful then level 100 pokemons who got their by rare candys

btw the exact same thing happened with my pokemon crystal...it was broken, hey does your pokemon red rattle when you shake it?

wheres NEsgirl btw? she was more interesting than half the ppl here and I thought she'd be All over this topic?

Yeah I liked Missingno. Later I read all about it and why it happens. Interesting stuff to me, but maybe nobody else. It's great how you might be coding something and unwittingly creating these totally obscure bugs you just don't expect.

It happens because when you talked to the old guy and he showed you how to catch a Pokémon, it was basically showing you capturing a pokemon but changed the trainer's name to "OLD GUY" or whatever.

OK, but to do that, it had to store your name somewhere else (as OLD GUY was overwriting that space for a while). So they figured they'd put your name in the variable where it knows what "random encounter" monsters you're going to get, being as they were no random encounters in Veridian City (or whatever it was called) and when you left that map the random encounter variable would be set correctly again.

HOW - EVA, when you then fly to Cinnibar Island, it doesn't overwrite the random encounter data. It says "just use whatever was there from the previous map". And since the data is utter crap (i.e. your name), you would end up with random monsters appearing depending on your name and also making the game pick monsters that didn't exist, hence "MISSINGNO" (missing number) and garbled crap.

It didn't overwrite your save cartridge or anything though. But I know it did do freaky things sometimes - I used a Gameboy Link thing and battled someone with my Missingno. It turned into a Charbok, was killed, except the dying animation played over and over and over in an infinite loop. Yeah. Weird. Did you enjoy reading why it happened? I KNOW I DID. HA HA HOPE IT WASN'T JUST ME.

Pokemon card were the only mafia we had in middle school. They were against the rules so we would steal the back packs from 3rd graders and take their pokemon binders then give them their backpacks back, then sell the pokemon cards at school. All the kids would get their cards con fiscated if a teacher saw them with it, and eventually the card shop went out of business, so business was good.

Never knew how to play, though.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

I am 16 and i still play pokemon red and yellow. The only reason i play it to try glitches. I went beyond the original missingno and "m" glitch. I found a glitch to get any pokemon at lvl 6 u want including mew and a weird glitchy pokemon (i beleive its called "h" its been awhile sense i fought it though) that can transform your pokemon into high level bulbasours(this is a rely screwed up pokemon and it literally changes ur pokemon to bulbasours) it acts like a trainer, it has a health bar that is so long it takes up half of the battle screen even though it doesent have that much health, sometimes when u hit it its health never stops lowering, and after u fight it it clones ur character and ur clones walk around . anyways it a really cool glitch even cooler then missingno except that u cant catch it and it usually freezes as soon as u get into battle with it.
