      Teehee. Ah okay, thanks.

Mark, I think that most of us with high posts write legitimate stuff. Also, keeping a dream journal on here definitely adds up.

Delightfully senseless, and fascinating in a train wreck sort of way.

Moved to Senseless Banter, where it belongs.

Too bad for the original topic. Sometimes legitimate threads just have to get hijacked.

The ironic part is that, since pj moved this to senseless banter, every one who posted in this thread just lost the post counts tallied up in here

blah blah blah... thats too much to read =/

A post count is a number. Thats it. Take it as you will. Anybody who "wears it" as a means to be automatically better then someone with a lower postcount is simply being stupid. That same person, in his quest for e-penorz would simply find some other way to set himself apart.

Its not the post count, its the people.

<---- And some of us don't need to worry about postcount at all.. XD

Why was it moved? It didn't seem at all senseless. In fact we were debating on how the site could be improved. Since when was that senseless?

Perhaps because it's not an improvement that's been proposed?

Well, I do believe it has come to the point where I can’t really say anything I haven’t already said. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to reaffirm what I feel are the most important points I have made:

      - It’s my humble observation that post counts are simply overrated

The rest was more or less me defending myself from the wave of personal criticisms I brought on by making, what seemed to me to be a casual suggestion. Perhaps my expressiveness gave a misleading impression about how vested I was in the idea, or maybe something else was to blame for the dredful atmosphere that quickly permeated the topic. It’s just unfortunate that what could have been a relaxed discussion about whether this idea was worth pursuing turned into a formal “hair-splitting” debate about whether or not I should have brought up the issue in the first place, which was a complete waist of time and energy.

      Touché

For those of you who read this topic and, instead of focusing your criticisms on me, gave your input on the topic itself (and left it at that), I thank you. For those of you who tried to lighten the mood, I also thank you. But for those of you who chose to make this about me instead of the suggestion, you’re on my list.

      dun dun DUN!

Oh c'mon! Read the thread through and tell me it didn't descend into senselessness back about 20 posts!

The meta-forum is for problems and suggestions for the board. There's nothing wrong with the fact that this has turned into something a lot more entertaining - but it long ago left the realm of purpose for the Meta Forum.

I'll own up and apologize if it was a bad move. It can be un-done, but I'm not at all convinced it was an error.

Yea it was a bit of a mistake to move it to senseless. Not that I care much, but still it was a normal discussion with just a few senseless remarks and comic reliefs.

I didn't read your post, but from the forum's current state, I see no reason for removing the post-counter.

Yes, but maybe if people weren't concerned with bringing their post count up, they wouldn't post nearly as often. Then lots of questions wouldn't get answered.

Because they mistakenly believe that they are adding to their post count?

Alright, I didn't mind to read the whole discussion (which I believe to be senseless imo)

Post count shows only one thing:

The relation of how old you are with how active you are.

I am pretty sure that the quality is what matters. I've never heard of any judgment towards posts of people who are relatively new/inactive. I really only look at the post count of someone under some circumstances. For example, if I really like someone's argument, then I'd check his/her post count, to get to know a little about the poster's background.

I'm pretty sure I made good posts when my post count was way before 30. Of course, experience helps, but it's not the sole thing that counts.

Post counts also have a lot of reasonable reasons to stay. I was gonna suggest the option of hiding your own post count, but thinking back I don't really like it (it would only suggest that post count does matter for status. Since I disagree with that, I don't like the idea).

      ----

No, people are not poting here anymore. This post is the perfect example

I just found a really good idea from the Dresden Codak forums.

As well as having number of posts, have number of words as well. That means if you don't post much, but you post well, you will have a high word-to-post ratio, and people will know you're informative. Obviously, senseless posts would not be included.

Well, if people were telling the truth about why they want to keep post counts, then they should be all for that idea.

What's the point? I mean really? No one looks at post counts and judges people by them do they? Whether you have 1 or 1,000 it doesn't change the person you are or the type of posts you make. Some people prefer to only comment small amounts others like to get involved more with the community and post counts or word counts will not prove either person a more worthy poster than the other.

For those it should really only ever matter to anyway, will be the people who stick around and contribute to this forum, and if you are here long enough you get to know people and know if they just spam or if they are informative or both. I mean what does it matter? Seriously?

I for one would rather see this a busy and active forum, like it is, than a controlled and limited forum. Getting people involved and encouraging posts is an integral part of making a forum work, I mean that's what we are here and posting for right? And if people looking to get their post counts up if seen as a bad thing then there is something wrong with you? As long as the posts are worthy of being in a thread, then that's good for the community and good for the people who originally make the thread. I would rather get 30 odd replies to a new thread I create than just a couple, as this encourages me to make more, and get more involved.

Post counts here to stay, because I like them

      Just my 2p worth.
