      "Your" and "you're" -- a serious issue!

I come before you today to discuss the threat posed to English grammar and spelling by the misuse of the word "your".

It is a widely spreading phenomenon that is currently invading the masses like a plague, forcing everyone, for reasons unknown, to write "your" instead of "you're" in sentences such as "Something tells me you're not really President Bush...", "Children are switching to salads and rice cakes...Ronald McDonald, you're our only hope!" and "You're drunk; get some sleep, you hobo".

As can be seen from the following intricately illustrated chart...

...the situation is indeed quite dire.

If something is not done, the amount of misplaced "your" words will rise to such an all-time high that there will simply not be enough "your"s left for regular use in sentences such as "Why is your nose oozing some sort of green slime?" and "Your carnivorous plant attempted to devour me; you can expect a law suit shortly".

All in all, I just thought this should be brought to public attention before it's too late. Schools are apparently not enough to educate people about the proper use of "you" and its various forms.
We must act or be crushed by this grammatically challenged menace!

Yeah Merlock, it would seem that a lot of people don't understand the difference.

Behind you 100%. Which brings me to my pet peeve...

I am so tired of everyone showing off and "giving it 110%." Try as I might, I can only ever muster 100%, if that. All of these people defying statistical boundaries and going that extra distance are making the rest of us look bad!

I have a question. How come the phrases "your welcome" and "you are welcome" mean the same thing? I've been wondering if maybe the entire world is putting "your welcome" instead of "you're welcome." But if it's actually supposed to be "your welcome" then the phrase "you are welcome" shouldn't exist. Help!

It has to be you're welcome no?
Well, no. I take that back. Maybe because it is "your" welcome.
The welcome belongs to you. not you are.

You've never in your life seen it written correctly.

Unless the Welcome is the possession of the one you are addressing, it's just wrong.

Your Welcome is looking mighty fine this morning, Mes.

I`ve never heard of "your welcome", it doesn`t make much sense either, it literally means "my welcome" (from your point of view), there isn`t even a verb in there ... To compare the two:

You`re welcome to try. (I am welcome to try.)

Your welcome to try. (My welcome to try.)

No not in that sense... I mean like when someone says "thanks" and you say "your welcome". And people always write "your."

I can't believe that everyone on the planet has been getting it wrong. I need to find some official site or something that addresses this, just so I can be sure. Because seriously - I've never seen it written correctly. Not in class, not anywhere.

Yep, there are no exceptions. It is, and will always be "You're welcome".

      Same thing actually .

"Can I have blah blah blah?"

      "Sure."

      "Thanks!"

"You`re welcome (to ask any time)."

There is no verb in "your welcome", it doesn`t make any sense in this context.

The adjective you're welcome has one meaning:
Meaning #1: conventional response to thanks meaning `freely granted'

      you're welcome

Also, don't mention it. No thanks are needed, I was glad to do it. For example, Thanks for picking me up.--You're welcome, or I appreciate what you did for Mother.--Don't mention it. Both phrases are polite formulas for responding to thanks. The first dates from about 1900; the variant was first recorded in 1841. For synonyms, see forget it; no problem,

(it's your welcome, not mine!) that would work, no?)

Only if your 'welcome' is music to my ears.

      Which, of course, it is!

Spart! I know the difference! I was just pointing out that the entire world seems oblivious.

But anyway, yes, good to see everyone in agreement. But: when was the last time you actually wrote/typed that phrase out, correctly? I always wrote "you're welcome" but couldn't help feeling like the odd one out, so I've tried to avoid it.

      Yeah, sure you do ...

I don`t write in English, that solves the problem pretty well...

My policy: always write it correctly. I don't mind being the odd one out if everyone else is wrong.

I tend to be a grammar whore myself.

Just today while playing my shitty Korean MMORPG I play (it's free and that's the only reason I play it), I read:

A: Who wants to go and kill Polgo with me?
      B: I.

      I? I?

P.S. Is it just me or did anyone else find the very writing of "your welcome" ugly? I mean visually, tangibly, ugly?

Sure, it's ugly. And...this is curious.

When thinking on the topic this thread is about, I was thinking that people just get lazy and as a result, not consciously, while knowing that "you're" is correct, write "your" instead, since it doesn't require an apostrophe and one more letter to be typed.

Never had I thought it was a world-wide conspiracy...how shall we fix this?!

It has to start somewhere. We'll begin a policy to permanently ban anybody who uses 'your' when they mean 'you're'.
