      Funny about Off-Topic section

I find it funny (more like a 'heh' funny) that DV is a place to talk about dreams, yet more people are viewing the off-topic section than any other.
Just now there were about 40 people viewing off topic, while only 0-20 people are viewing other sections. Anybody else notice this or find it funny?

Well, I usually don't bother with the dreaming forums because new information rarely comes up there. It's the same questions over and over.

Dreaming sections tend to get old and repetitive after a while, they need a major clean-up to interest more experienced dreamers...

This is 500% true, infact, it's good because I havn't seen "Those People" since I decided to only post in the dreaming forums, and by that I mean feel moderately happy about posting. Let's say, necessery posting!

But yeah, I avoid "Them". And it's good to help people, I deserve a hug for saying this, I mean come on!

Agreed... (and why is it a shame?). After being here for several years, the same repetitive questions come up again and again and again.

What do you propose we do about it?

Well it's not too late to nuke all off-topic forums. Nah, don't see that happening. Really though you can make some good friends or get into some useful debates (excluding the mountain of useless ones) through off-topic.

It's getting sad, actually. It's basically everyone coming over here and talking about random crap, while like a few users answer the newbie's questions. For God's sake, even some Dream Guides rarely post in there!

I enjoy posting in both parts of the forum, but I guess a lot of people don't.

      You guys.

Anyway, hear me out. This is something my boss told me a while ago, and it has stuck. It's very easy, painfully easy to complain about something. It takes some brain power, however, to suggest a solution alongside the complaint.

Complaining only creates more work for the people who run this forum. But complaining yet throwing out a possible solution decreases the work but simultaneously increases progress.

Please, don't just sit there and moan. Let's hear some ideas.

      1. Get rid of senseless banter.
      2. Get rid of R/S

Damnit, why isn't Mes a mod yet?

Make more dreaming-based features for the members, I suppose.

How's this: Your post count won't go up if you post in any off-topic area.

That should encourage more posting about... what was it called again.... oh yeah... DREAMING!

I think the assumes that people give a shit about post count. Which they don't.

      Aw thank you, you two.

I definitely agree that some off topic-ness is only natural and is actually a really GOOD thing. It's where we get to know people and strengthen our bond as a community and stuff. But what I fear is that people who come here with the intent to learn about lucid dreaming eventually lose the motivation because there's not enough people to help them out. I've noticed this happening with myself, even. Anyone else notice something like that? I think that's really at the heart of the issue.

I think making all off topic forums not add to post count is an idea with some potential! Seeker mentioned somewhere an idea for SB to subtract from your post count. Hmmm...

Edit: wasup, we all know that some do care.

Seriously, why aren't you a mod yet?

I frequent the off-topic areas and help newbies out and such. Maybe we should encourage that. Like make an extra option for people who frequent the LD section.

Are you kidding, do you really think that getting rid of the off-topic sections will herd everyone to the on-topic ones, it still doesn't change that they're crap...

The problem is that there's just too many people, too many newbs, and they're the ones who start most of the threads. If there was just a way to make the stimulating discussions stand out... There's already a newb zone, a search function, and a tutorial section; I don't know what we could add, it's like the intelligence level of those forums is lower.

While I'm ranting, I'd like to mention that Senseless Banter has taken a dive lately for the same reasons. It seems to be a cycle...

well i still consider myself a newbie. sumtimes i make threads about ld questions and later realize that someone else already made a thread. i think they should make brand new members read all the tutorials and stuff about the basics, faq, etc. and lock up everything else until all the basics are read.
this would save us from all the repetitive questions (i apologize, i'm guilty of that!)
