The longest one I knew up until now was "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis " and its a disease you get i think from breathing in fine volcanic dust. chemical compounds should not be counted because the criteria is words that you know... Not even chemists use the really long names in practice. the longest word I know of is smiles. As far as length goes, there is a mile between the first and last letter.
