Post Laptop Died. Saved the Hard Drive. What Are My Options To Get The Files?

      Hey guys!

Well the title pretty much summed everything up.

Spilled tea on my computer, worked for a week.

Then the screen didn't show anything, then the laptop didn't work at all.

Then took it to a laptop spot, that told me it was fried, and he would pull out the hard drive for $30 the genius I am....err or your average joe, knew he could do it himself...and I saved $30 =)

So now, the part where my fellow Technical DV'rs come in.

What are my options to recover my files from my hard drive?

      I have another laptop.

      Thanks in advance.

I would think put your hard drive in another computer then transfer your files to your new computer via flashdrive. You may just need to have a tech person do it unless you want to borrow someone else's computer.

Hopefully someone else comes up with a better solution.

Is their a way that I can buy an external hard drive, then have a techie' transfer all of my files to that external hard drive?

      Is something like that expensive?

No need. My dad bought a really neat device a while ago, I'm sure you can find one if you look. It's some sort of sleeve that you can connect a regular old hard drive into, then connect that to a USB port. I'm not sure where he got it and I haven't actually seen it, but he was telling me all about it and I think it only cost him around $30. I'm actually going to be doing this soon with a hard drive from an old desktop computer of mine that just went a while ago.

      Sweet!

If possible, could you find out the actual name of the product? I'm not having much luck on google.

Looks similar. I'll be talking to him later tonight (he's away on business), so I'll see what I can find out.

What you're looking for is a hard drive caddy/enclosure. They come in a variety of sizes for different hard drives.
You can just connect your HDD into it and there will be a USB connection on the outside.

It's then just an external hard drive on it's own. :-D

Most computer shops should carry them and as Supernova said, they're relatively inexpensive.

(sorry if this is a bit old, just if anyone was curious)
