      Your Folder/Directory System on Your Computer

      Just curious how the rest of you have your folder/directory system set up on your computer.

      For me:

      I would like to see someone who has a system more complex (but still structured) than mine. Have at it

      I don't even want to post mine because it's so messy. I recently had to reformat my hard drive and haven't cleaned anything up yet. I've just put everything wherever I can get it the fastest.

      The only comment I have is that for years I hated the C:\Users\...\My Documents or whatever it was (this was before Vista came out) and so I made a C:\dox\ folder that I put all of my documents in, and made it the default. Since I did a lot in the command prompt it was so much easier to type. So I'd have C:\dox\java, C:\dox\[schoolName], etc. That was kind of my original thing. I haven't gotten around to doing it again.

      @Dianeva, I do something similar. I have my hard drive partitioned so that my OS is on C:\ and my personal data on D:\.

      I've always wondered why people prefer command prompt over the GUI. Did you originally start out with command prompt (before using the GUI)? That's one of the reasons that I've heard from experienced computer-users (*cough* geezers). Another is from up-and-coming users who think it's "cooler" (why? I don't know; for me, it is much quicker to use the GUI).

      I mean no insult if you fit into one of those categories; in that case, I mean no insult for anyone reading this. Just an observation of mine.

      But this is getting off topic. Anyone else?

      I was only 15 when I did this (22 now). It was when I was first learning to program. I for some reason never used an IDE. I think maybe the first programming tutorial I had ever read recommended that I should just use a text file and compile it through the command prompt, and that built the bias in my mind. It just felt purer or something, like I was really programming. But now that seems insane. I don't use it at all now though unless I have to for something that can't be done without it, or if I'm on linux.

      @IAmCoder, that's an interesting set-up. So, you have to remember the date that you worked on something if you want to retrieve it? Or do you just use a tool that searches through your folders for a specific phrase/filename?

      The locally attached D: drive. I'll spare you the entire 27 terabytes of RAID volumes on my NAS, as they're just entirely too massive to post!

      Firstly, I see Justin Bieber in there.
      Secondly, what's 0_private? lol
      Thirdly, how did you make an image of the directory tree?

      They can be if you supply enough high voltage to them. I play with electricity on a regular basis, so anything is fair game.

      1. Yes, it's the famous video on YouTube of him getting whacked in the head with a bottle. I was going to AutoTune it, but someone beat me to it...
      2. Those are the unspeakables... lol
      3. I took 4 screen shots and arranged them together with Gimp, as I couldn't stretch the window big enough to capture them all in one shot.

      It's terrible. I have 59 folders and 28 other files at the root of C drive. I'm getting a new laptop on Saturday, though, and I'll keep it much more well-structured (I promise!)

      Also, I'd love to see what's in "2007-09-27 Tesla Action"

      You should also be required to specify where you hide your porn. Failure to do so means you are lying.

      Was it someone on this forum who mentioned making invisible folders? Just name it a space character, and choose a blank icon in the options. If I wanted to keep something private, that's probably where I'd hide it.

      No real order that I use aside from

      --Program files (includes all my games and some select programs)
      --[Me]
      ----Pictures
      ------Desktop backgrounds
      --Other
      ------Music
      ------Mypictures

      I need nothing more, since I consume most of my media online.

      The other folders that windows puts there for people to use by default sit unused, for the most part.

      No actually. No one uses my computer but me. I keep it locked when I'm not on it, so I have no need of extra folder hiding.

      lol, or start the name of the file with a period. You could also just change the permissions on the folder so that no one but you and superusers can read.

      mine is pretty basic, I usually throw files I'll only use for a little bit, but can't go into /tmp onto my desktop. Everything else goes into ~/Documents

      My setup is quite simple.
      Code:
      C:/Users/<me>/My Documents
      	-> Personal folder
      		-> C++
      		-> Python
      		-> Opera
      		-> <projects>
      		-> Toolbox

      khh, Very organised. I like it.

      Might I ask why you have an Opera folder in your 'documents' folder?
      Also, why do you have 3 separate folders for Video?

      I regularly use development snapshots of Opera, and that's the folder where I keep track of the bugs I find (screenshots, simple webpages demonstrating a bug, etc.), so I can report them.

      I started out with one folder for video. Titled "Video". Then that harddrive got full. So I created one on my other harddrive, called "video2". Then that harddrive also got full. So bought an extra harddrive, and put on it a folder called "video3". And perhaps I should note that that harddrive also got full, and that I've off-loaded some stuff onto my folders "video4" and "video5" on external harddrives. I just don't ever delete stuff I've downloaded. Figure I'd rather keep buying new harddrives when they get full, than have to download something again.
