      Regular Harddrive Vs SSD

For those of you that have solid state drives in their computers, how do their performance compare with that of regular harddrives?

Is it really worth my money to get one or should I stick with regular ones?

If expense is an issue, I'd recommend getting a 32 or 64 GB SSD only for your OS + programs. (instead of getting an large (more expensive) SSD to store everything)

If you can afford it get a solid state drive that slots into one of your pc's pci express slots for your operating system and software. It is incredibly fast.

Well I want to get a Macbook Pro with bootcamp to allow me access to Windows 7 but I'm not sure if 128 GB SSD is enough for that and all my other applications...

I recommend staying away from any of the Sandforce chips ie OCZ Vertex 3 line as they are riddled with defects and performance issues. Aside from that I highly recommend one for your primary boot drive, especially if your mobo supports SATAIII.

I currently use 2 120GB SATAIII SSD drives. 1 for OS and the other for VMs. For mass storage I still use traditional, spinning HDDs (4TB). If you really want a blazing fast machine you can always setup a RAID-0 with multiple SSDs

If you're talking about a stationary computer where you can afford one harddrive for the OS and another, separate one for storing all your files then I would say it is absolutely worth the money. Best investment I made for my computer.

      A thread in tech talk!

Putting your OS components on a SSD will definitely speed you up, weather or not it's worth the cost depends on what exactly you're looking to do with your computer. Care to elaborate?

I disagree. When my parents were getting a new computer I told them to get and SSD and have someone put the OS on that. My mother is a very simple computer user, she reads and writes email, browses the internet and might play a game of solitaire every once blue moon. And yet she is very happy she got the SSD, because the computer is snappish. You double-click an icon and the program is up and running. If someone with that basic computer needs enjoys an SSD, I think absolutely everyone would.

Well, I guess it depends on weather or not that's worth ~100 dollars to you (I would think so personally )
