      Noob VPN Question

So I have been reading about VPN's (Virtual Private Networks) lately and I have a question. Are most if not all paid VPN services just scams to steal your identity and credit card? Or are they genuinely making honest money? Most of them look pretty sketchy to me. As for the free ones, does anyone have any experience with them and would you recommend any specific services?

Not all of them are scams, I've used a couple paid vpn's and I got the promised services I paid for. There's also the possibility that some vpn's will log or sell some of the information you send through them. One VPN that I liked was called Mullvad, it's based in Sweden I think so you can use it for torrenting without much risk of getting caught. One technique for increasing your privacy is combining multiple vpns using a virtual machine or using tor through your vpn.

E: as for free ones I would recommend ProXPN

There's no point in stacking VPNs, as the last VPN still gets the data unencrypted. So you might as well just use that service. And tor only hides your identity, they can still sniff your traffic at the exit nodes.

The only way to be secure on the net is to make sure you use point-to-point encryption, aka HTTPS.

If you're going to use a service like that, pay for it with a prepaid visa card. Besides, credit cards aren't exactly anonymous.

It's not completely pointless. The more vpns you thread your connection through, the less likely there will be any IP logs that point back to you. It's pretty much only useful for illegal things though.

What if you simply don't want your neighbors/people at Starbucks looking at everything you do?

If you're using a public network or your neighbor's wifi, then you don't need to stack vpn's, you only need one. If you're worried about your neighbors seeing data you're sending on your own secure network, then as long as you have wpa2 encryption, there's no need for a vpn because it's pretty hard to crack wpa2.

Unless you have WPS enabled on your router. Then it only takes a few hours. So make sure you turn of WPS, or check that your router is not vulnerable.

If you can figure out how to set it up, you can use "tinc" It is free and not too hard to set up (I couldn't help you, its been a loooooooooooong time)
I use it between my house and my bro's house for LAN games. Just cause we like our games private. There are a few tutorials out there and it works on windows with an updated TAP-Win32 driver. Quite a few linux distros support it as well, but I've only messed with ArchLinux with tinc. I am not sure if OSX is supported.

An advantage with tinc is it is very fast and has built in encryption. It can serve to extend your home network with simulated "hardware," such as turning a computer into a router for the VPN. Its all pretty complicated, but it functions exceptionally well and is easy to set up once you figure out how. I remember it only took about 10 minutes to add a computer to the VPN.

If you value security, a free VPN is not ideal.
