Is the volume control thnig in control panel? If not, go re-download it.

It would still show the icon if that was the case.

I could think of two possiblities. Either something happened to your sound card drivers, or your sound card is kaput. How long have you had it?

Problem fixed a while ago folks, didn't want to leave you all still trying to help.

Gez came to IRC, suggested system restore. Worked like a charm. Score 1 for System Restore.

I love System Restore. It always seems to fix things that you wouldn't expect it to fix

That's what I thought. System Restore is, apparently, nothing more than a filter that will save backup copies of certain system files. It sounds OK in theory, but to me it always sounded a bit lax - I mean, come on, that's far from a foolproof backup solution - yet it seems to work so damn often I'm surprised I have never once used it.

I know it's fixed already, but when you saw the problem, did you restart the computer? I have had something similar happen, and restarting brought the sound and everything back.

its happening alot lately, i think its due to my laptop overheating.
Yeah sometimes restarting would work, other times it wouldnt :/

What a lame attempt at a joke.*

But yeah, I've never actually used System Restore because I always a bit sceptic about rollbacks, and I turned it off to save disk space, but now I have over a TB of disk space, maybe I should just enable it and give it a go if my system fucks up.

      * Ok, maybe I laughed. Maybe.
