      Hey guys,

I'm about to lose my email addresses obviously; I've been [email protected] for nearly 9 years now and really don't know whatelse to use. I hear lots of talk about Gmail so I'm leaning towards that, but what I'm wondering is do I need to log in using their interface every time, or will they let me retrieve my mail using an email client like Microsoft Express (like by entering the mail server name and my login details)? Anybody know?

      Thanks.

I use Gmail, it's enough for me. You can choose to use their web interface, which is, in my opinion, ugly, but it works just fine and I haven't had many problems with it. It's written with some pretty clever AJAX so it's nice and interactive and whatnot, but not everybody may find it useful.

As for retreiving email with outlook/thunderbird/whathaveyou, yes, Gmail can be set up for POP3 email retreiving or whatever. I used Outlook for a week or so and had no problems with it (Not sure why I don't use it any more, though)

Gmail also has nice junk mail settings, and a clever filter for forwarding/pruning/labeling messages, and it does some neat things like string together e-mails that it thinks are part of the same conversation (Using the Re: Subject thing) in the browser interface.

I'm not sure if gmail offers POP3, but I just use the web interface. It's kind of interesting that in the history of computing, nobody has come up with a really good e-mail UI. Someone could make it big in that space, if they have the right creativity. Until then, I think gmail is the best around. I like having the search feature, too - much more sophisticated than any other mail search (though LookOut is pretty close - in fact, Outlook is useless without lookout).

Why are you going to lose your address on DV? It's not as obvious to me for some reason. o.o

Well he no longer owns DreamViews.com as a domain or the content on the site. (I assume)
And hence unless he works out something with asher then he won't be able to use his DreamViews email address anymore.

Personally I would work something out with asher like [email protected] re-directs all emails to a gmail account, so then he wouldn't have to worry about your emails taking up space. Or, Just use a gmail account and tell everyone you know you've changed your email (which is really annoying).

How do you connect to the net, IceDawg? Doesn't your ISP offer mail with their service?

If you would like, I'd be happy to create an account for you on theveryfew.net - you could be anybody you wanna be there. It would only be webmail though - no POP or SMTP to hit with a mail client.

      I still don't understand. o.o
Why would asher take away icedawg's e-mail? E-mail accounts are thrown around like biscuits to anyone that wants them on paid hosting. As long as dreamviews.com remains dreamviews.com, I don't see why icedawg can't use his e-mail anymore.

If the emails are stored on asher's server then it's his choice whether or not he wants icedawg to keep it.

Excellent, thanks for letting me know.

Yes my ISP does but its reliability is hardly respectable.

haha...thanks for the offer, I appreciate it, but I think I'll get by with Gmail.

Well, I'm just grateful he said he'd forward mail for me for a little while. I had anticipated losing all my email addresses upon the sale of the site.
