It depends on what you mean by "optimize performance". Are you saying that it's not working properly? If so, check out the PS2 repair manual I wrote. If I may say so myself, it is the most thorough and exhaustive you'll likely ever find anywhere.

Without actually modding the system so that you could maybe improve performance by overclocking it i doubt you will be able to make it run any better. Modding isn't very good either because after time it just breaks the console.

... and I'm not aware of any hard or soft mods that actually improve performance. Maybe add a feature or two (such as the ability play other-region-coded or copied games) but, as far as running any faster of more efficiently, probably not. At least not to any noticeable degree.

Define speed. Do you mean framerate, resolution, or something else?

Wow, that brings back memories, GH. I remember my GameWinners days. That link inspired me to log in for the first time since...let me see, it says, " You last visited: January 17th, 2005 at 02:57 PM" That's a long time. I was only there about a year, I think I joined in February of '04, then I moved on to GameFAQs and never looked back. Still, nostalgia hit there for a minute.

      Also, awesome write-up there.
