      MP3 Playback Problem

      Ok, a few things:

      • I have a fast and reliable computer.
      • I have always been able to play Mp3s with any program, until now.
      • I think this is a universal problem and so doesn't depend on what program is involved.
Until a certain point in time, I stopped being able to use/play Mp3 files. I don't know what happened, but some programs/applications/games I have, stop working because they can't play an mp3 file, or can't open them.

What is strange: I can play/use the Mp3 files manually, with most of the recommended programs, for example if I double click any Mp3 it will play. But they fail to work when another program is required to automatically open/run them - Eg Morrowind stops running because it can't play the title-mp3 file, which I can run outside the game. Like I said, these used to be working no matter what.

Could it be iTunes? DirectX 9 detected no problems.

These files involved in the errors have not been modified, so perhaps it is how they are run which is the problem.

      Anybody!?

You'r using DirectX then you're on Windows right? Windows doesn't use iTunes to play mp3s, it uses it's own system. Try upgrading to DirectX 10. If they are games that you are having problems with, see if they are X games or GL games, if they are OpenGL games, reinstall that.

openGL has nothing to do with sound

      *edit*
I'm assuming your using XP, can you confirm that?
      *edit*

      Ok,
first off, check for driver updates / known issues for your soundcard

Double check that DirectX is ok
      Start -> Run -> "dxdiag"
on both the "sound" and "music" tabs, use the test button thingys

      also, check your registry, goto
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Drivers32

(note: "Windows NT", not the "Windows" section)

      and make sure that
string key "wave" is present, and set to value "wdmaud.drv"
string key "wavemapper" is present, and set to value "msacm32.drv"
