      Need some network help

To anyone that has a network setup with a router. How do you make an internet connection useable (to another connection) without the administrator connected to the internet? Specifically, I have a 360 and I want to use it online without my computer hooked up online like I have now.

what you need is a router
what type depends on your setup

does your internet come in over the phone line, or via your cable operator?

forgive me, but from what you've described, it sounds like you don't have a router (or you're using a router purely as a switch)

can you post the make and model of your router?

also, is your connection "always on", or do you have a username & password and have to manually connect?

      *edit*
also, the cable that connects you to the internet
is this plugged into your computer, or plugged into the router?

      *edit 2*
this is the setup you need (lifted straight off of an xbox site)

ya thats exactly what i have above, and it works. i do have a password for the internet connection (thats saved anyway so i dont need to type it in) but not for the network. im just wondering how i can connect to xbox live with my 360 when my modem and router are on while my comp. is off. my router is a linksys BEFW11S4, works great, its wireless too but i just use cables.

Err...a router has several ports, hence the illustration above.
What's the problem with having your PC off while your console is on? I mean, the router is always on in any case along with the modem, is it not?

      there's too many unknowns here

only thing I can suggest is you allow me access to your machine via RDP

      - setup remote desktop (control panel > system) and on the "remote" tab, check to allow users to connect remotely
      - allow port 3389 through your firewall, if you use one
      - on your router, forward port 3389 to your computer IP
      - PM me your WAN IP and computer username / password
      - trust me not to bork your computer

Well, what does that even have to do with the PC though?
The XBox is basically a separate machine with its own system, is it not? I don't see any wires connecting the console to the PC in the illustration so I'm assuming it doesn't do anything through the PC but just directly connects to the Internet?

Perhaps Secret Neo is simply not fully understanding how the console is supposed to be operated for connecting to XBox Live and whatnot?

was thinking one or all of the following, really
      - doing a local IP & port scan to verify xbox is in same subnet as router/computer
      - see if some weird port blocked on the router that stops xbox connecting
      - router routing Xbox traffic to wrong internal IP

all of these I could check with remote access to the machine
