Recording internet sounds to mp3 file

Does anyone know how to record a sound off the internet and put it into mp3 format so i then could play it on my mp3 player. Example i play a you tube video and i only want the sound recorded on a program so that i can chnage the file type to mp3. sorry if it's a bit cnfussing, hopefully you will get the main obejective.

      This would be greatly appriciated.

      Tahnky you.

most modern soundcards have a channel called "stereo mix"
this is the processed sound from the card before it hits the speaker plug
(think of it like plugging the line out into the line in, but without the cable - it's done "inside" the soundcard)

grab yourself a sound recorder (Soundforge, Audacity, whatever)
mute everything except the master volume & stereo mix, and record

a lot of recorders can record direct to mp3, but if not, Lame is a good PCM to mp3 encoder

I'd suggest using Windows Media Encoder, which is what I use under Windows for recording sound and/or video output from any local applications.

But I also don't see much sense in recording from YouTube or such. The audio quality is as bad as the video quality in such media. It would probably be a better idea to search for a download of whatever you want in higher quality. But maybe that's just me with my dislike for lower quality multimedia.

      I'm not so sure...
I haven't used it in a while and don't even have it installed anymore but I wouldn't have used it back when I needed to if it only produced WMA format results. I'm pretty sure there were other formats of audio as well.

And besides, even if there aren't, there's always other audio software to convert the WMA into anything else.
That makes it a two-step process but I'm just not aware of how to record local sound output with Goldwave, which I use for sound editing and conversion (or Soundforge and the ilk for that matter).

Goldwave you just change the recording properties on your soundcard to stereo mix

Thanks guy for all your help so far. I have managed to download the Audacity program and have succesfully recorded the sound that i needed. Heres where the next problem starts, I go to export as an mp3 and it says i have to make a folder called LAME. So i click open and it says it can't make or open that folder. You guys have been very informative to me so far and maybe you can help me on this next problem?

      Thanks.

For some strange reason, I haven't been able to record to .mp3 from Audacity, since soon after I had it. I can only export to .wav. But, I have ACID, so I usually put the wav file in ACID and then export it to .mp3. ACID's not free, though, but you can probably find a converter online.
