Well, thought this might be useful to people, so here's a little write-up
Ipod's use mpeg-4 AVC for video
(Advanced Video Codec - also known as H.264)
and mpeg-4 AAC for audio
(Advanced Audio Codec)
You may want to research your iPod's resolution
as there's little point bunging on a film with full DVD resolution if your iPod only has a 320x240 screen
Find out what resolution your screen is, and use this resolution when converting the DVD's Vob-chain to MPEG-4
I believe ipod's can also read MPEG-2's as well
and you may want to use this instead
MPEG-2 is less processor intensive (both audio & video), so you may save battery life (at the expense of file size) using MPEG-2 over MPEG-4
but I have no idea, off hand, what the difference in battery life would be
Convert DVD's to iPod compatible MPEG's
- (WINDOWS ONLY) DVD Decrypter & SUPER
This is a 2-part operation, with DVD Decrypter ripping the DVD
and SUPER encoding to Vob's to MPEG-4
DVD Decrypter
easy to use, but now defunct and may not work with newer disks
May have to hunt around for binaries
SUPER
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
(direct link to download - http://www.erightsoft.info/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe)
This program really is SUPER for ease of use - all codecs are built-in
- (CROSS-PLATFORM) Handbrake
http://handbrake.fr/?article=download
kept up to date so can handle newer encryption methods
- (LINUX ONLY) dvd::rip
http://www2.exit1.org/dvdrip/
Nice GUI "wrapper" program, written in Perl with GTK interface
Uses Transcode
- (LINUX ONLY) Acidrip
http://untrepid.com/acidrip/
Again, nice GUI "wrapper" program, written in Perl with GTK interface
Very similar to dvd::rip
but uses Mplayer / Mencoder instead of transcode
