      Apple's ultra thin laptop...

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7188849.stm

Opinions? Is it only impressive on the outside but sucks on the inside, or this something actually worth the money?

Definately not worth the by unless you plan to add it to your art collection.

I would aviod that laptop personally, in the interest of not getting a papercut.

      anyone smell that?

I'm sure this idea will catch fire.

Maybe reduced combustibility might have been on their minds during design?

      laptop's a laptop
the fact that it's Apple, means next to nothing

      Intel core 2 duo
      12.8 inch widescreen display

      no optical media
but external drives on a laptop makes more sense anyway
considering the space & power limitations

the only thing that'd concern me are
      - the "integrated" battery (is it replaceable?)
      - the screen & hinges, how robust are they? (considering how thin it is)

      *edit*
just noticed the solid state hard drive option, as well
would be quite interesting to have a laptop with no moving parts

No the battery isn't replaceable, but if something happens to it Apple will replace it for free.

Solid state hard drive? I didn't know those were stable enough to use yet.

I could see it being useful for a writer or something, but for the average person the lack of a DVD drive doesn't seem like it'd be a good choice.

Because I hate their shitty business practices, and their inherent arrogance that makes me ignorant?
The mere fact that they're charging £1,200 (roughly $2,350) for a portable movie viewer/writing tablet is enough to back up my hatred.
They over charge everything they sell just so they can tack that lower case "i" shit everywhere.

What is the advantage of having a "solid state" drive?

I'm not sure what you're referring to, Macbooks don't cost that much and the AppleTV is 229. They really don't overcharge for their computers, remember you have to compare prices to comparable machines. Macs aren't equivalent to the average computer, they are high end. They do make a low end one, it's less that $500. Also their software is very cheap, their office suite is like $79 (compare to MS Office) and OSX costs $129.

They're FAST. The average time that you spend waiting for something to load off of the hard drive is spent with seek times and spin up times. SSDs have neither.

      Really?

The laptop weighs 1.3 kilograms and costs £1,200
The only thing Macs are good for(read: better than a PC) are music/video editing. And thats it.

      Wait, it's volatile memory????

Wow. Thats crazy. I'll stick with my slow moving parts non-volatile hard drive thank you very much... I'd guess they have a method of assuring power though? albeit, if it runs out, you're royally fucked.
