      Permissions

I'm trying to delete this program called UltimateZip 2007 but these two pesky .dll's are hanging around. When I try to delete them, it tells me "You need permission" ....so I click OK and it will tell me to try again. WTF. I'm root admin.

Please help me get rid of these.

Get an Ubuntu Live CD and locate the hard drive. Linux doesn't know anything about Windows permissions (I think) so you can delete the dlls if you want.

Go to CMD, and write del C:\UltimateZip\Pesky.dlls

Or well, write the path that fits, with the file name in it too. CMD doesn't ignore permissions, but sometimes it can do more than Windows can.

try unregistering the libraries before deleting them

      at the command prompt:

      regsvr32 /u c:\path\to\file.dll
      del c:\path\to\file.dll
      (\_ _/)
      (='.'=)
      (")_(")

It failed.... (One of the files is called "asdfasdf.dll" because I was trying to get rid of it that way.)

I have no idea if this works, but I think I remember changing a file to a read-only file to be able to delete it? Let me know if it works, haha, just a guess.

Right, I know what you mean, and I think that should work, but it isn't a read only file.

what do you mean "I think that should work, but it isn't a read only file." ??

I'm not sure if things are different on vista in this way, but on xp if you right click it and go to properties theres a box with read-only next to it and you can click it. Again, I have no idea if that really works but its worth a try.

or are you saying it wont let you change it?

      you could just leave them....

the error message gives you nothing to go on
"access denied - you do not have permission to delete"
"access denied - another process is currently using this"
"access denied - some other reason"

you're doomed to fiddle around and hope you get lucky

even if you circumvent windows using a boot disk, you have no way to gauge what side effects you'll get if you hose the file

      Well thanks anyways.

The only reason I need to delete these is because UltimateZip 2007 is the default opener for archives, which gets annoying, because I already un-installed UltimateZip 2007.

that's what the regsvr32 /u should have dealt with...

unregister the listeners from the windows shell

      well, anyway
if you really want to kill them
download Damn Small Linux (about 50mb)
but you may get unexpected results if windows expects the files to exist

Have you checked that there isn't a service running in the background related to UltimateZip? It may be using the dlls and thus placed a lock on the files.

Log into safe mode (F8 on startup, I believe). You should be able to delete them from within that.

      Safe mode did the trick.

Wow at first I thought you meant the C language.

I'm way too addicted to C.

Try booting into safe mode/recovery mode or whatever it's called. That will mostly guarantee that only a minimal required amount of dlls will be loaded.

If you don't want to use an Ubuntu Live CD (I'm not even sure it can mount ntfs in read-write properly), there is a windows equivalent you can get:

      http://ubcd4win.com/

This has saved my ass in the past, when I needed to back up stuff after my windows system files got corrupted. It requires that you have a copy of the WinXP CD, but I'm sure that won't be a problem.

Yeah, I already solved the problem.

      Safe mode did it.

      Yeah, thanks too.

Does safe mode allow you to circumvent permissions?

I bet the DLL was being loaded by some spammy software that was running in the background that needed to be killed. Kind of like how you can't delete a text file if you've got it open with notepad.

Is it possible that instead of uninstalling UltimateZip the proper way, you just deleted the directory? Well anyway, kinda too late now hehe.

      Yeah, probably.

It was no good anyway. Glad it's gone. The files are still default as it though.... oh well I'll figure it out.
