Yeah, I'm not sure yet. But I'm seriously thinking about going back to Windows. I have an XP disc and I might just boot it and install XP. The main reason I switched to Ubuntu is because Vista was so slooooow. But my computer didn't have the right specs to run Vista smoothly. I thought about installing Win 7, but everyone I talk to says that XP would be better. So, what do you think?

What do you miss from Windows that Ubuntu isn't yet supporting?

Definetly compatibilty. The games that are for Linux aren't that great, and several programs that I like aren't for Linux and WINE doesn't support them very well, if at all.

I'm not at home right now, on a school computer. But I'm pretty sure I have 1GB of RAM, but that's really all I can remember about it. I'd have to check it when I get home.

Go for XP. Installing Vista was the biggest mistake I ever made. Of course you can always have a dual boot option so that you can boot up in windows or Linux.

I would but I really don't want to split my harddrive. Plus, I really wouldn't have any reason to keep Linux because all the programs I'll be using work fine on Linux.

Well, I certainly reccomend XP/Windows 7. Windows 7 has been hailed as the Vista that should have been. I haven't tried it, but what I read about it's speed is very positive. I love XP. Very reliable.

XP. In my experience with it it will do everything you need, and it's reliable.

I would definitely recommend upgrading your RAM. Also, if you want speed, look into TinyXP, it's on all 4 of my computers.

Meh, it seems MS isn't going to support XP very well, and I don't want a vulnerable OS. If you're planing on running Windows 7 you should have more than 1 gig of RAM, so it looks like you'll have to stick with Linux, if you are to have an updated OS.

On Wikipedia, it says that XP will continue to receive support from Microsoft, however it is limited to security updates, whereas before it also included technical support and things alike. Complete support will be discontinued in 2014. So basically, security is not a concern with XP. Either way, you can just install some anti-virus software.

that's not the point, though Even with the dreadful security of Windows, MS did at least pretend to care about their customers by fixing vulnerabilities What next major security hole are MS going to refuse to fix? This is about making XP worse, so people entrenched in Windows-land are forced to buy the latest version

Sorry about that Ynot, I completely missed your post. That doesn't sound too good though. You should probably buy a new computer and get Windows 7 on it, or just install Linux or some other operating system on your current computer. Windows 7 might be possible with 1GB of RAM, but it's not gonna run smoothly. Otherwise, just take XP. Yes, it seems that there might be some security problems, but the question is, if it's gonna matter. You can still simply install some third-party software which can protect you. Until the hackers find some kind of hole that can destroy your system completely, of course.

Windows 7 runs fine on 1 GB of RAM I hear, obviously it won't be as fast as, say, TinyXP, but you'll be updated and won't have to deal with security holes.

I use vista and XP on different comps...I don't notice a huge difference, but I prefer XP. Seems more basic and less useless crap. A friend of mine told me Windows 7 was awesome. Super fast, and way better than vista
