External attention - focused on the outside world, like the dog barking outside, your breathing, the radio in the background. In short, external stimulation.

Internal attention - Focusing on your inner self, thinking of the dream world.

Look at it like this, instead of focusing on external stimulation, imagine inner stimulation.

You'll know because you won't be paying any/barely attention at all to the outside world.

Switching from one to another is simple, becoming absorbed in your own imagination/thoughts and not paying attention to the outside world.
