      WILD without prior sleep?

When WILDing, you're supposed to sleep for 4-6 hours, wake up, then do the WILD technique, but I'm sort of able to do it right as I go to bed without any sleep. I've found if I lay there and think of nothing, but still try and stay awake, eventually I'll drift in and out of consciousness and next thing I know I'm in a lucid dream. It's hard to explain, it's like I'm half-asleep and when I start to dream I just automatically know I'm dreaming. Anyone else experience this before? It's a pretty convienient method.

The general problem with jumping straight into a WILD is simply this; it won't be as long. This is because the REM cycles are shorter at the beginning of sleep than toward the end (say five hours into it). That's why most people don't WILD right off the bat, and wake up in the night to do it. However, if it works for you, great! If it's convenient for you and meets your needs/makes you satisfied then it's just fine. Congratulations by the way!
      ...And then to dream...

Congrats on your success! Most find that it takes a very long time to WILD before sleep. I have achieved it before, but it took a long time and didn't last very long. I have found others who WILD before sleep quite often as well. it may be that some people are abloe to WILD before sleep much easier than others. If you won't to counter the short length of your LD (due to it being before sleep), you can always practice DEILDs and chain your lucids. Good Luck in your future efforts!

The weird thing is, it doesn't SEEM like it takes that long. As I said, it's like I'm half-asleep. I lose consciousness, but I'm easily startled by outside noises and sometimes HI. Suddenly I'm just in a dream automatically lucid. Now I need to master chaining my lucids like you suggested, because I always fall back to sleep before I can try.

well it sounds like to me what you just explained is a DILD. In a WILD, there is no going unconscious. You go straight from being awake, to asleep and dreaming, without losing consciousness.

So although what you are doing is giving you awesome success, if you went unconscious, its not a WILD.

I've always wanted to know whether this was a waste of time or not. I try to WILD almost every time I go to sleep because whether or not it results in a lucid dream, it is still practice at both WILDing, and getting used to sleep paralysis, if one is so lucky.

I tend to refer to these as Unintentional WILDs. I get them all the time when I nap during the day. I lay down to take a nap, not intending to WILD, just trying to go to sleep...and then I always regain consciousness during the SP or HI stages and follow it into an LD. To me this is not a DILD, as someone else suggests, because a DILD is dream initiated....not SP or HI initiated. I don't know if there is a name for SP or HI initiated LDs (anyone know?)...so I just refer to them as unintentional WILDs.
