To get the thoughts out of your head, try counting your breaths. This will keep your mind from wandering or falling asleep.
The colors and images are the onset of HI. This is a good sign, if you hang in there and don't focus on the images too much and don't get too excited, you should soon enter SP where you will encounter a lot more HI and eventually a LD.
So count your breaths to clear your mind, and to relax I suggest following the flex freeze method in Yoshi's WILD technique:
