I think success lies in repeated experience and acceptance of the process. SP is not so much a coveted state (or a negative one), but rather a transition that lets you know you are very close to your goal. Personally, I've come to enjoy the sensations, but from time to time I want out as well. You just have to keep experimenting with it - what you are trying to do is a bit of a balancing act - remain asleep and yet aware at the same time.
I used to get confused about false awakenings too, but now I'm good at dispelling them with solid reality checks. Again, patience and practice are the key points.
Sounds like you are doing fine, just keep it up!
