The concept I would see as effective because such a trail of thought is something one can rather simply leave as the main course of thought and thus lead it into a dream but the idea of WILDing during the day has its drawbacks. If one isn't sleepy during the day (which is rather common) then falling asleep and relaxing won't be as easy, may make one anxious, uneasy, etc. thus not allowing for any sleep onset.
On the other hand though doing so at usual times such as before falling asleep at usual hours (late evening/night), during the night after awakening or in the morning won't have the same effect considering the very concept of this idea: busying the mind with a trail of thought that is much like thoughts that may go on during an actual day while awake.
Thus, this is an interesting idea and I'm definitely willing to attempt it. Perhaps sleep onset during the day/after morning readiness isn't as tough to achieve as it may seem.
P.S. Here's a thread somewhat on topic seeing as this idea consists of a firm trail of thought, which leads into a dream while allowing ot keep some awareness: http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24540
