      Judging by other peoples experiences:

Yes it increases the likelihood of lucid dreaming, but you'll most likely be disappointed.

Das ist ein Traum!: Der Novadreamer, Dreamlight und Remee

Here you may find some studies done by S. LaBerge (who invented it).

Unfortunately it's in German but contains several english qoutes and links to english sources.

      Anyway. There's translate.google.com

I guess it might work if you have good support and coaching within a peer group. Maybe one can share the cost and the novadreamer...

I'd rather spend my money on a nice pair of earplugs, sleeping mask and supplements. A better pillow, darker curtains, a new bed. Yeah

Seriously though, it might increase your chances of getting lucid if you use it, but chances are you'd end up having to use it to achieve lucidity every time. You can do it without supplements.

They do increase your chances but its a matter of whether or not you could stand to have a big mask wrapped around your face while your trying to get to sleep. If you could put up with that, I found an instructable for how to make your own: The Lucid Dream Machine

You still need to train yourself to recognize lights as a dream sign.
