I think it would be best to take your 3d model and take renders from each direction, it doesn't look like that complex of a figure.

Okay, fine. I would have to go the 3000 miles across the country, break into the Pixar animation studios, find the computer that the model was on, get the model out of the computer onto a flash drive, get the hell out, go the 3000 miles back to my house, pirate the software that they made it with, and render.

in other words, i can't do that.

isnt it impossible to do that?

or if you could it would take hours for one part of it.

because just Kevin has like a quadrillion polygons?

and breaking into Pixar would be considered terrorism.

Insanely high polygon counts are always a result of subsurfs, no one ever does those themselves.

are you sure? Pixar took two years trying to make Kevin work correctly.

I don't really think that has anything to do with the modelling of the bird itself, but more like character development and/or animation. For a professional modeller, and especially on teams that works for pixar, it'll never take too long to make the model itself.

As ninja said you never ever make all those high polygon counts yourself. That is indeed a result of subdivision surfaces (especially in a movie like Up, the models/style in the movie is done in quite a smooth/simple manner). If you want an explanation then basically in short it works something like this:
A subdivision surface, in the field of 3D computer graphics, is a method of representing a smooth surface via the specification of a coarser piecewise linear polygon mesh. The smooth surface can be calculated from the coarse mesh as the limit of an recursive process of subdividing each polygonal face into smaller faces that better approximate the smooth surface.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdivision_surface

Having to make so many polygons yourself would be insane

so your saying if they turned off subsurfaces on Kevin then she would look like shit?

i know what subsurfaces are, i just didn't know how much they were used.

Well if you knew what they are then I'm not quite sure you'd ask whenever or not the model would look shit if they didn't use it ^^

Here's a small picture to illustrate the idea:

But no, Kevin would definitely not look as smooth without the use of subdivision surfaces, like the creature above.

Of course there's variations on all models, how much is used and how much they differ from the original model, but it will still create that very smooth surface which will bump the polycount by quite a lot
