      New Sketches

I've been told that my sketching is not "sketchy" enough. I always have had trouble relaxing and freeing up my drawing (and making it look halfway decent at the same time). This is my attempt to practice "scribbling".

This is basically just doing whatever.

Wow, looks really good! I've been practicing my sketching for the last few months too! Keep it up, you seem to have a good 'artists eye', as you get proportion and perspective really well.

Cool sketches. I like the one with the stairs.

I don't think I've seen your other ones, but if you are going for a more sketchy look, this is way off. You clearly have skill, I'm not doubting that. But for sketches, you don't even really need to have the shape correct. Sketches are more for getting the feeling of the drawing correct. Movement, feeling, areas on figures that are taking the weight of the body (like on that laying down figure the arm would be darker because it's taking more weight for example) etc.

Don't worry if it doesn't look like the thing you're drawing, it's about allowing yourself loosen up. I was exactly like you, my sketches were basically contour drawings, maybe with a bit of shading. After I started being really (REALLY) loose at first, it made my finished artwork 10 times better.

May I ask, have you taken art classes where teachers have taught you this or are you self-taught?

Well I'm mostly self taught but I learned that in an art class yeah.

Why? Don't doubt it, just try it, it works!
