Tell Me About How To Stop Procrastinating

tell me Dx I procrastinate too much, it is Sunday afternoon and I had a science project due last Monday, which I haven't started, and I already have 50 points deducted for being 1 day late...
and I had to write a research paper, and I didn't do a 1st or 2nd draft, and turned in the final draft like a week late plus spring break to turn it in.
      From my rotting body,
      flowers shall grow
      and I am in them
      and that is eternity.

Hehe, I suffer from procrastination too. Try keeping a planner and give yourself rewards for turning in assignments on time, or try to get motivated to finish your work and get it over with. It's really on how you look at it. If you think it's going to suck and you don't feel like doing it at all, then of course it's going to suck! Try to stay positive about your assignment and you'll find that time flies. Who knows, you might just have fun doing it too.

You have to say "Enough is Enough" to yourself. Go to a room with the least distractions, put your cell phone, electronics, everything thats distracting in another room, far away from your reach and say to yourself I am not going to do anything until I get this done. Hopefully this is enough motivation to help you get started. Once you start, you will be surprised how much you can get done.

Don't open or turn on any internet chat applications either and just make a promise to yourself that you won't talk to anyone until your done.

Trust me, I know what this is like. Sometimes you even have to move yourself to a library or something where it has minimal distractions and should be quieter.

Good luck, and always remember... its not worth loosing silly marks over, just do it and get it over with so you can relax and enjoy your days off or school breaks.

Let us know how it goes!

I had this problem in school, too. My motivation was to spend a few hours working really hard to knock it all out, then have the rest of the day to relax.

Just an interesting perspective on this topic I'd like to throw in:

I had the same problem throughout all of highschool and it really fucked me over in the end. Just do w/e it is you need to do, right away. I always had a habit of coming home from school and telling myself that I'd take a short break before I got started on my homework but that "short" break usually lasted the entire afternoon. Like cndngirl said, avoid distractions. I always told myself that music would help me think but that was just bull, I ended up paying more attention to the song than my homework in the end.

But listening to music actually helps me concentrate, not bullshitting you
I have to listen to music when I do homework, unless I am reading (that is too distracting) but it keeps me enthused (is that a word) to do my homework
though I am still putting off the science project thingy, I had to do it today but I skipped my last class by going to the nurse for the whole hour xD and science is my last hour so I just went straight home afterwords xD I just popped some benadryl at lunch and I could feel the tiredness and heaviness by 7th hour so off to the nurse xD probably unhealthy but whatever, I have one more day to do it...I hope I do xD

(For me it depends on the type of music. I'll sometimes listen to classical music or whatever type I listen to, as long as it doesn't have any words or heavy beats. If it does, the music only becomes a distraction.)

I have a huge procrastination problem. There are a few things which seem to work, starting with the most effective:

      1) What almost always works for me is to go somewhere where there are no distractions. I sometimes go to Starbucks to do homework, because I know I'll have nothing to distract me, and I usually end up getting a lot more done in 2 hours spent there than I would in an entire day at home. Any place would work. A library, your school if you're allowed. I'm in college and I tried staying after school for the first time a few days ago. I had an assignment that I had barely started which was due the next day, and I had expected to be up all night finishing it, but I actually finished it in 3 hours in the school library, it was really nice. The only problem with this method is it's inconvenient. You can't stay away from home all the time.

      2) Another is similar, to allow yourself no distractions while still at home where you technically can fall for them. What you need to do is create a rule in your mind, telling yourself that you're not allowed, under any circumstances, to do anything other than whatever you're working on (besides bathroom, etc.) until you get a certain amount done that you decide ahead of time. This one works well for me too, as long as I succeed in implanting the 'rule' within my head. Often, like today, I tried to do that but thought in the middle, there's really no reason not to check DV quickly. Then 2 hours later.....

      3) Next is making a list. I find it works really well too. The problem is, I hate making lists. I feel like it's cliche, like I'm weak in admitting that I'm so weak-willed that I need a list to get things done, and it's sometimes difficult to judge ahead of time how long everything's going to take, so if I don't complete something, it will feel like I failed, even if I worked adequately. But as long as I convince myself that I'm going to follow the list, that I need to get everything on it done by the end of the day, it works well. Almost every one of my rare miraculously productive days have been the result of a list.

      4) Pure willpower. I haven't achieved this one yet, but am convinced it's the one that fixes the problem of procrastination for good, while the others are only temprary pills for it. You'd think it was easy. It seems easy right now for me to say that tomorrow I'll get so much done, but I seem to say that every day. Then, in the moment, I won't really care and will want to check DV or my email or look up one little youtube video, then hours later I'm still doing it. Almost every day it happens.

      Don't make threads about procrastinating.

      Just fucking do it.

I did the same thing starting at about year 10 (probably the year I should have started working even harder).
It hasn't made much difference, but it depends on what you want to do with your life.
Of course school is fucking bullshit. The only reason I stopped bothering was coz it was too easy and the classes bored the shit out of me.

So depending on what you wanna do you could bludge school and then leave when you're able to. But if you wanna be a doctor or something, you're gonna have to knuckle down in maths and science etc.

In other words, you may be okay procrastinating, but if it will fuck up your future, stop it.
That's all there is to it.

I suffer too. It really fucks stuff up. I'm really bad at handing in homework etc because I just can't be assed doing it.

But I'm working on it. Just telling myself that as soon as I get home I'm gonna sit down and do it. The funny thing is that once I get started I quite enjoy it. Meh.
