If there's any modern invention that has caused hell for people it's the ICBM.

In all seriousness though, I think from the worst would be something of the three mentioned so far. TV, Nuclear technology, or Guns.
In the right hands nuclear technology can be safe and effective. the incident at chernobyl could never have happend at a western power plant apparently because of something to do with the design of the reactor.

It depends in whos hands the nuclear technology is ultimately but its positive effects outstrip the negatives if you ask me...

Think about it-- Hundres of Titan ICBMs in Russia, poised to strike the US, and no one has turned off the Security system. It's starting to break down.

Russians don't have Titans, nor are they planning on nuking the US any time soon. The US doesn't have nukes in Poland either, nor are they still on alert against Russia...

      Erm?

      Yes, they do... Hundreds.

In a defense system. I didn't say they were planning on it, I said that it could happen by accident because of the degration of the security system.

The USA is negotiating with the Polish government to place Missiles probably balistic missles in Poland.(look it up it was on the news a few times)
Apparently they are designed to protect europe against big bad Iran but likely they are there to place to intimidate russia.

After all if the usa is trying to protect europe from Iran why are they trying to place the missles all the way by the north sea instead of a more southern country?

      Finished my paper

      Hey everyone,

I just finished my paper. I wrote about the evils of the television, while looking up at my own television every three seconds to see if Idol was on yet. XP Oh, I'm a bad little hypocrite. But at least it was easy. There's lots you can find wrong with a TV.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I had no idea this would spark such a conversation!

Not that it matters anymore, but I think most of the complaints about television largely apply to all forms of media. Radio, video games, movies, and books have all had similar accusations leveled at them.

If you're looking for detrimental technology, the obvious solution would seem to be war technology. As far as damages go, it's hard to beat machines built specifically to destroy human life and human creations.

It's becoming more technological, so I'd go with money. It's brought a whole lot more harm than good! (Yes, I'm bitter.)

Other than that, the current most detrimental technological "invention" facing the English language is the computer. People no longer have to learn how to spell and soon we will be faced with kids not being able to tell the difference between "there" "they're" or "their." Oh, wait! Seen that. Punctuation and grammar are seen as a thing of the past. Phrases such as "o rly?" and "i can haz cheezburger" may have their place under certain circumstances, but they are overused to the point where I feel such spelling/grammar may become some peoples' concept of what is "right."

      *sad* I love you, English!

I can totally relate to this. Most of my job is done primarily through orders written by (seemingly) partially retarded college students. Seriously, I've seen things written better by third graders than some of the morons that are literally throwing away $40,000 a year so they can party with their fraternity/sorority and get drunk as all hell.

I actually have a whole mess of those emails saved on my work computer. I'll have to post 'em some time. They're pretty good.

The irony of saying the detrimental effects of computers here, where we can share our thoughts instantly to the world and get instant responses.

Really, everything has some detrimental effects, but most have WAY more positive effects than negative effects. Focusing on some tiny, insigifnicant negative effect is rather pointless, in my opinion. To pretend the internet, cell phones, and computers were detrimental technology is just, to be frank, a bit retarded. I mean, computers? Come on guys.

If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I'm going to bring up a valid argument (valid argument?) and say: The Cotton Gin.

Invented I believe in 1794 by Eli Whitney, the Cotton Gin was supposed to make slave labor easier. OoOoOoOo, but things took a turn for the worse, and instead of decreasing the amount of slaves needed to get the job done, it actually made the cotton industry grow and therefore increasing the amount of slaves needed!
