Tell me, Are people actually "going green"

Are people actually "going green" or just saying that they are?
Is it just a cool thing to do or because they really care.

Interested in the motivation behind why they do it

Do you know anyone that has? What did they do?
Are you planning to join in
to do your part?
Please tell me.

My next car will be a hybrid, I unplug everything with an LED, receiver, or transformer when I'm not using it. I walk wherever I can. I do it because global climate change sucks and it's cheaper.

I think most people do it as a fad. Right now its cool to be an enviromentalist. While I agree that cleaner air and more trees is always good, I cant help but think most people participate to fit in, or for fear of being chastised for not acting the way the envriomentalists say

My mom bought a camry hybrid. It gets very good mileage, is pretty good for the environment, and is a sweet car. She bought it because she works for the EPA.

In the 70's, the big fad was bitching about global cooling. We were supposedly going to block out the sun and kill the world's crops. That is out of style now and just so 70's. I don't know what the fad was in the 80's. I was really young then and wasn't really into politics, but it seems like I heard a lot about smog and chemical waste dumps. In the early 90's, the craze was plastic. Plastic was supposed to be ruining the atmosphere then. Interestingly, the assistant fad was bitching about the cutting down of the world's trees and the rainforests. The simultaneous existence of those two fads confused the Hell out of people at the grocery store when the baggers said, "Do you want paper or plastic?" But that got overshadowed once the big ozone hole scare fad got into full swing. That was the number one environmentalist trend for a long time, and everybody was bitching about aerosol cans. Once the ozone hole disappeared from everybody's give a shit meter, global warming got to be a huge craze. That is where we are now. I wonder what the next environmentalist complaint trend is going to be.

That is an excellent idea. I will email it to the chairman so they can discuss it at the next End of the World Horror Trend Fashion board meeting.

I drive a Neon and complain about all of the SUVs and big trucks on the road. I also turn the lights off when leaving the room and reuse towels. My carbon footprint if fairly small compared to most Americans.

I do this not so much to be green as to save $$$$$

No need to worry about global warming, energy costs are going to be the death of the USA.

Little things add up. I sewed a hole in a pair of jeans I would've otherwise thrown out. I always save those plastic easter eggs for the neighborhood hunt.

Also, I think the best way to be environmentally friendly right now is to become vegetarian. Ask me why. Go ahead and ask. I'll tell you. =D

To be honest our pollution causes only 2% of the "global warming" the media makes it sound a lot worse. The earth goes through natural cycles on temperature change, we have an ice age every 15 000 years.

Besides I don't see a point in recycling and all that crap when the government plans on using nuclear power, well the English government anyway not sure about the rest of the world.

good question but he's right about our impact on the climate, our impact is so insignificant, it would be like a snail farting in a pool, what a giant impact!.....lol

but yea im much more concerned about animals losing their habitats due to logging and animals being poached and whales, and chemical spills and oil spills are a much bigger threat to the enviroment then harmless co2.

but im getting a hybrid anyway, gas is expensive, why not use less, save some money, and send less of it over to the greedy opec elites.

Some people... A lot are truly trying to go green... The problem is there is a lot of green washing out there companies telling you something is a good thing when it's not. I could give you 1 million examples but I give you just one. Recycling, people are becoming more and more aware of the truth behind this but so I’m sure a lot of you know this already, but recycling causes so much pollution in from melting down plastics and metals. Now don't get me wrong recycling can be a good thing, in moderation, as it diverts so much was from out land fills. Remember the 3r's? That’s Reduce Reuse and Recycle. the recycle is the last R for a reason, people seem to skip the first two and just recycle because the other two aren’t stressed enough ... and can you blame people for not reusing plastics when they are leeching toxic chemicals that are cause boys to be born hermafidites (sp?) and posing a threat to the existence of humans and causing many types cancers to both men and women. Can we just get rid of plastics and move on. No. What would out hospitals use? It would set us back about 100 years. This is one of the many Deadly cycles we got out selves into, and once you dig a grave for your self it's hard to climb out of it.

Also if you use energy efficient light bulbs buy ones manufactured in Canada... that way they won't contain mercury

My advice for people who are trying to live a greener life style is to think globally and act locally. Before acting know the global consequences and be suspicious of everything that is marketed as “Green”

Vegetarian=/=vegan. And actually, I'm neither one. I just eat less meat.

80% of the corn in the U.S. is not used to feed people. It's used to feed cows. 90% of energy is lost when you move up a single trophic level. If we were to use that land for vegetable crops for PEOPLE, it'd be that much more energy efficient.

And because we grow so much corn for cows and fuel, we produce less soybeans. Brazil is the second-largest producer of soybean (we are first). So now they are clearcutting more of their rainforest (Brazil is the largest country and has the largest rainforest cover in South America) to produce more farmland to make soy. And to raise cows.

So if we eat less beef (cows are the biggie), we are more energy efficient, our country uses less land for corn (which is for cows!), less pressure is put on Brazil, they preserve rainforest, rainforest sucks up excess CO2 and preserves biodiversity, we all go home happy. Sound good to you?

I've been a vegetarian for about 25 years, so I guess I'm more green than some. I don't do it for "green" reasons, but there ya go.

I probably use more electricity at home than most since I have a music studio, but I do recycle and take the train to work.

I'm not sure if the individual can make too much of a difference without big companies doing their part. It takes a lot of individual families going very green to equal the negative effect of a single big company that has no green policies.

I don't see a point in trying to reduce our polution and try to help out when governments are going nuclear. We might as well just drop a few A bombs all over the place.

Nuclear power is just going to destroy the planet just look at the meltdown and chenobye sp?

I'm sorry but I just CAN'T be a vegetarian, plus, is 1 less person eating meat going to really impact the industry? its not like the butchers will stop killing cows if me or you or your entire town stopped eating meat, the industry will not spot unless EVERY SINGLE PERSON, refrained from meat, but then again...thats absolutely unlikely.

but for those of you who can be vegans and whatnot i congradulate you because you have some will.

me on the other hand, im the pickiest eater on earth, i hate broccoli, i hate asparagus, i hate mushrooms, or creamy stuff, i dont like pretty much 95% of all food americans eat....my diet consists of:

Breakfast: Cereal or some kind of egg+meat sandwich
Lunch: some kind of sandwich with meat, or a burger, pasta with meat....etc
Dinner: same as lunch, some kind of meat, steak, pasta w/ meat...etc

as you see, my entire life depends on meat, without it i would literally die because its just about the ONLY thing i eat, so i'd starve to death if i became vegan.
I would rather die on my feet then to live on my knees.

Believe it or not the meat industry has gone down... but very slightly by people choosing to not eat meat. However, that’s not to say I’m telling an omnivore to stop eating meat.... what I am suggesting is buying meat from local family farms when ever possible. This stops a lot of impact on the planet and on your own body as family farm tend not to use the chemicals and antibiotics that factory farms use.

Nuclear power isn`t that bad really, it has a lot of advantages, and it`s pretty safe outside of 1980s Ukraine. The only major problem it poses is that we still have no idea what to do with the radioactive leftovers. Still miles ahead of coal/petroleum power plants in my opinion...
