      tell me about archery

I know in the search bar there is a topic up about medieval archery, but that is not what I want to know about.
I am considering picking up archery myself and the sites I find dont explain some things very straight forward...such as what draw weight I should select for my bow. If any of you go bow hunting or just shoot for fun I would love to hear some recommendations for starting out. One thing though is I want to use a traditional long bow or recursive bow, not a compound one.

Ah... Someone who like recursive bows... So great...

Anyway, I shoot for fun. Most people use a bow with 50 poundage or more to hunt, meaning that would be quite powerful, if you are just shooting at targets, or for fun, maybe get something less, maybe a 40 at the most. Arrows are just as important as the bow, I prefer wooden arrows, since they don't break or bend as easily. But it is hard to find any (at least that aren't warped).

Basically it comes down to what is most comfortable for you.

lol, whats wrong with liking long bows?

I am thinking I will like to try hunting after I get better, so maybe I should get the 50lb and build my strength up to it...

I dunno! Everyone one I know (except one) uses compound bows...

Alright! Might want to wear long sleeves while practicing. Some say this constricts arm movement, but I don't think so, and it will protect your left forearm from getting snapped with the bowstring. Which hurts...

If 50 is too much, or too little, look into other ones, I don't know about around you, but most hunting stores around here (only place I could find a bow) will let you try the bow out a little. Not with arrows, of course, but just to see how it feels.

Heh, I'm looking into this as well. I plan to make my own longbow, though. Be sure to get a good forearm guard for your off hand. Shirtsleeves just don't quite cut it, especially with heavier draw weights.

I've always wanted to make my own bow... I know shirt sleeves don't stop all pain, but a little pain makes you learn from your mistakes. If using a good stance, it shouldn't be a problem.

Fashion yourself some leather vambraces to protect your forearms.

I've been wanting to get into archery too. I'd rather get a longbow too. I want to be able to use a more powerful bow if it ever comes down to having to hunt for food.

Yea... Compounds are more powerful than long bows... And easier to pull back...

Lol... Yes, most people use compounds for hunting since they are easy to pull back, and deliver more punch... Plus they are usually more readily outfitted with accessories. Like sights and stuff like that...

Longbows require more skill, and are more fun. Compounds are stupid and for lazy people.

So, learn on a longbow and use a compound in real life?

But, if someone were good with a long bow, wouldn't they be even better with a compound?

Also, are heavier longbows more powerful?

Not really... About the same, if not worse. The force isn't the same as the skill... you can fire a gun at something, but if you don't have the skill to aim, using a BB gun is just as useful as a cannon...

Not sure... My friend has a bow made of aluminum, which is kinda heavy, and shoots really forcefully... But I'm very good with my wooden one.

This is actually why I want to learn a longbow...not cause compounds are for stupid people, lol, but because I want to learn the real skill behind archery and feel like Im really accomplishing something every day I practice.

Exactly... When you hit a target, aiming without aid... It is a very satisfying sound...

Almost as sweet the sound of a throwing knife successfully hitting a target...

That'd be good! I was thinking about starting shooting again since during the winter, there are less things to do... *Looks out to two feet of snow on the ground* But I don't want to lose my arrows...

I'm sure the sleeves on the puffy coat would cause a few problems, but I would wear a jacket, and for gloves... Either hand wraps, or an archery glove.

lol, that would be awesome. My snowboarding jacket is actually compareable to that since it is black and kind of long. I wear it open though
