Well, which version of Vue 6 do you have? I mean like Infinite/xStream/Pro/etc
Making a "realistic" scene in Vue takes many things correct. The right lighting model, the right terrain scale, etc.
Plus, there really isn't a way to get 100% absolute realism out of your 3d application. The way that the professional studios achieve the realism that they do is render out into different layers, and then tweak everything in a post production tool such as Adobe After Effects.
I believe that Vue 6 does not have the terrain fractal feature for procedural terrains, and this would cause a challenge in producing a realistic terrain. The solution to this would be to cover the ground in an ecosystem that consists of grass. This is the reason I asked which version of Vue you have, is because the lower end ones do not have the ability to create ecosystems.
So, with that being said; I believe you could create a procedural terrain and then hit zero edges. This will make an entire "scene like" terrain. You can then take your mouse and make an indentation in the terrain, this will make a valley like effect. You can then place water into that valley.
However, if you could please be more specific in what you are exactly trying to achieve I may be of more help to you.
