Unfortunately, for practical purposes, it's just not possible. You can't will yourself out of a sleep cycle just because you really want to have a lucid dream. Sleep just doesn't work that way. And even if you could, your REM periods are very short early in the night, the lucid would last no more than a minute or so. However, long REM periods without prior sleep does occasionally happen. When you wake up in the morning it actually takes a few hours for your REM cycle to reset (this is why early morning naps can produce dreams). Every once in a while, it takes a little longer and hasn't reset by the time you go back to sleep. Thus producing immediate REM. Even so the odds of this occurring on a regular basis are slim to none. If you really can't stand waking up in the middle of the night your best bet is an early morning nap. However the sooner that nap is to when you woke up, the more likely REM will occur. |
