I am obviously doing something wrong now.

So, last night I attempted to WILD before sleeping, (Yea yea blahblahblah that's stupid. I was impatient I didn't wanna WBTB D: ) and I laid there for what seemed like 2 hours and nothing happened, sure I lost feel of my limbs, but nothing would come after that, and then after I quit trying, I woke up in a weird way. Sort of like I was EXTRA aware all of the sudden and completely and fully awake. (Like more than regular life.) and could not go to sleep until 2 or something, I don't remember when I eventually drifted off, I just know I barely remembered the dream afterwords and questioned whether or not I actually went to sleep.

Did I enter the lucid state while still awake? If so, have any of you all ever become extra aware and energetic and clear-thinking after sitting in bed trying to do stuff like that?

Oh, and what do you actually feel as you WILD? I have no good indicator that I am making progress. Does swallowing and moving your jaw count as moving and a WILD breaker? I can't seem to stop, it just BOTHERS me when theres excess spit in my mouth and my mouth won't stop making it. And yet my mouth is completely dried when I wake up in the morning sometimes. Maybe I should sleep with my mouth open?

...Do you even feel anything change if you mess up with a WILD? Is there any way to know you've screwed up and moved something and that stopped the WILD?

I'm afraid you already know a big part of the answer. Blahblahblah that's not going to work. Under normal circumstances you don't start to dream until you have slept for at least an hour and a half, and good long vivid dreams don't usually happen until at least four hours of sleep. So it is extremely unlikely you are going to go into a dream right after you go to bed. But you seem to know this already. I am just reemphasizing it.

WILDing requires that you actually fall asleep. It is not dreaming while awake, even though it sounds like that's what it is. You do fall asleep, you just retain enough awareness to notice the process. Therefore most find that being comfortable is very important. It is best to just get comfortable and ignore things like whether you are swallowing or moving. Just pay attention to your anchor the whole time.

So, seriously, try a WBTB next time. Or take a nap a few hours after you wake up. I know you knew that was going to be the answer, but you are just losing sleep for nothing otherwise.

      Good luck!

Okay... I knew about the whole "It's bad to WILD before you WBTB." but I was hoping in the back of my mind I would get lucky and do it since it's possible, just to have my first LD so I can be motivated after seeing how awesome it is to try harder with my LDing effort...

and yea, I know you fall asleep, I have an idea of how the process works, but I don't know what sensations I should be feeling and if moving my jaw and swallowing effect WILDing at all...

Hey don't worry man it's good practice. I attempted a waking WILD or two just for the heck of it when I was just learning. But you do really need to be doing WBTBs. I also recommend that since you seems to be slightly hard to get to sleep for you, like myself, that when you do WBTB you just get up for a few seconds, then go back, find a comfortable position, and focus on your breathing. Try not to think anything. Just let thoughts slip out of your head.

      Hope this helps!

I can see where you might get impatient and try WILDing at bedtime. I've tried just for the heck of it a couple of times. But in my opinion, if you are just looking to not having to put too much effort into it, doing a WBTB is much less hard work. You're less likely to lose so much sleep because you will already be relaxed, and getting a LD will be infinitely more likely. I agree with Phantym in that you should try just waking up for a minute or two after 5 hours of sleep and then try WILDing. You don't need to stay up for long. I just turn over and drink some water from the glass by my bed for a WBTB. It depends on how hard it is for you to get back to sleep.

Don't worry. You can move your jaw and swallow. You can even move your whole body if you need to. It's important to be comfortable.

As far as what sensations to expect, that differs from person to person and WILD to WILD. You may experience visual and audio hallucinations. You may feel physical sensations like falling or floating or sliding or stretching. You may feel a very intense tingling feeling or a heavy weight. Or you may feel vibrations. Or you may feel nothing at all and just find yourself in a dream setting. In my experience, none of these sensations are subtle. It is obvious what is happening when it happens. Just feeling numb or losing track of your body or feeling a little tingly or dizzy has never led to a WILD for me.

I hope I don't come across as a know it all or anything. This is just the best advice I can give. Others might have other ideas. Good luck!
