I would say do reality checks as much as you can!, and I think the majority of the posters on this forum will tell you the same, as will any other serious lucid dreamer. Also make a list of when you HAVE to do them, for example: whenever you walk through a door, whenever you enter a car, whenever you see/hear something that surprises you, etc.
That's my opinion. Dream recall is very very important. In fact, dream recall comes FIRST before even attempting any lucid dreaming techniques. I can't stress how important it is, because weak memories of dreams can ruin the whole point of lucid dreaming. I'd say you should be able to vividly recall 2 dreams per night. Keep writing in your journal, and read a couple of past entries every day. My dream recall was extraordinary many years ago, and then it suffered. I am currently working on getting it back to where it was, and day by day I am improving. Here's the formula:
"Strong will / determination" plus
"good nutrition" plus
"dream journal / very good recall" plus
"at least 8 hours of sleep per night" plus
"lack of stress" plus
"regular reality testing" plus
"increased awareness during the day" equals
= Lucid Dreaming
That's my formula. And of course, in addition to that, reading lots of material about the topic, and trying the different induction techniques.
