What to think of before falling asleep.

      Hello.

My name is Carl and this is the third day of my progress to Lucid Dreaming and awareness.

But I have a problem. When I'm laying in my bed and try to focus on that I'm gonna remember my dreams I can not fall asleep. I can't sleep if I'm thinking about sleeping.

Anyone knows what I'm talking about? English isn't my native language so it's hard to explain. Is there any solution to this? Is there anything else I can think of that also works in remembering dreams?

      Thanks.

Hmm, I agree it can be quite difficult sometimes, but you should eventually fall asleep. I doubt I'm thinking single-mindedly on remembering my dream when I'm at the verge of falling asleep, because if you were able to do that, you would probably enter the dream consciously (WILD). In other words, it's difficult to focus on remembering your dreams all the way until you fall asleep, your mind will eventually drift off. Maybe it helps to concentrate the focus only on the dreaming and try to forget about the sleeping?

And welcome to the forums, by the way

Welcome! I think everyone has the problem now and again of their minds being too active to fall asleep, and it stands to reason that focusing on something, like remembering dreams, is counterproductive in 'switching your brain off'.

Maybe it's the way in which you're thinking about it? Instead of repeating "I will remember my dreams" in your head, try thinking in a more abstract manner by imagining your dreams and imagining them being too vivid to forget in the morning. That's what I do anyway. It should make your mind trail off into dream-like subject matter, which should send you to sleep.

Hope this helps (and that you can understand what I've written!)

Well, I'm not really an expert... I haven't had a lucid dream yet. However, I do remember my dreams pretty well. I think the problem may be that you're worrying too much about it, and that's keeping you awake. First of all, I've found that keeping a dream journal is one of the most effective ways to start remembering your dreams more successfully. And yes, thinking about your dreams is also effective, but not if you're thinking so hard about it that it starts to bother you. It's a good idea to think about it for a little while before you go to sleep, but at some point you just have to hope the thought has gotten through to your subconscious. Maybe you need a distraction. For example, I listen to a sleep meditation recording when I want to fall asleep––which is great, because it distracts me from my worries and forces me to focus on relaxing. So, perhaps something like that would help? Hopefully that all made sense...

Hej / Hey there are lots of different methods to remember your dreams.

What I find best is just to sit up in your bed and tell yourself why you want to remember your dreams and just tell yourself "Tomorrow when I wake up I will..." ..remember 1 dream, remember my dreams and so on. Because with just the power of intention you can do anything

Another method, which seems to work, I haven't tried it myself but many people have had succes with it: http://www.dreamviews.com/f15/if-you...ams-try-93005/

So don't tell yourself over and over in bed that you are going to remember your dreams or any other mantra, if it keeps you from falling asleep...
Repetition wont make the mantra work, the intent will.

Thanks for linking that! It seems to have helped a fair few people, and I think I'm going to give it a go now

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and the friendly welcomes I must say this site has changed my life. Maybe I'm thinking to much about it and it becomes a distraction from relaxing and fall asleep.

I really like this idea of imagine that I remember the dream so well that I will not forget it when I wake up. I might just try that this night.

This is also a very good idea and can be mixed together with the first one. If I really want it to then it will become real. The power of the mind is incredible.

I do have a dreamjournal but I think I'm to lazy to have a journal on real life to But I might try that if I'm out of options. I doesn't hurt to have a plan B and C

      Relax!

I used to have that problem but have come to see that for DILD just go to sleep like always. Work during day on ADA and RC 'S. Maybe after awaking at 4 am I'll try some suggesting but I am sleepy enough at that time I just let the mind go where it will. You cant force LD's.
