Hey there!
It's not quite about the number of RCs you do, but it's about what you do during the RC. To be honest, many 'more experienced' lucid dreamers don't use RCs after a while. The point of a reality check is to make you question that 'this' could possibly be a dream - without questioning your reality, your RC may aswell be useless.
It isn't very practical to rely on an RC to get you lucid because; let's be honest, when you're dreaming, most of the times you're in a situation where you're already preoccupied with an activity of some sort and your mind's already busy thinking about things. Do you think you'll randomly stop to RC? Chances fall more so to the 'probably not' side.
What you want to do is either be aware of your environment/setting (noticing if things around you are odd) or practicing personal awareness (such as the link theCambino shared, up above ^^ ). Carrying awareness throughout daily life is the ultimate thing for those who practice DILD.
Hope this helps
