Why dint I attain lucidity inspite of doing an RC?

So today early morning I had a dream .

I was travelling in a school bus with all my college friends. And there was another bus in front of ours and it was filled with hot chicks. For some reason, nobody in our seat had seen them, only me. I caught fancy with one of the girls and I smiled at her. She started mocking my smile to her friends. Her other friends started looking at me. And I bowed down (like hiding my face) and they all started laughing. My friends saw this. And in the dream one of my friends asked one of the girls whether they were laughing at me. And they said yes. I felt really embarassed.

It was at this point I did an RC. Because college friends were one of my consistent dream signs. And I found out I was in a dream. But instead of attaining lucidity, the dream just got over (like it became black) and I woke up- with the feeling of embarassment.

Any idea why I din't attain lucidity even after doing an RC?
And if you guys can help me, what does this dream mean ?

yes many people have made this mistake before. Because you are so deep in your subconsious, sometimes it is still hard to realize what the reality check's represent or mean. There is a difference between the background thought that your dreaming and the full on "HOLYSHIT IM DREAMING " But you'll know this if youve had one before. One time i did it in a dream and thought, "hmmm, that must mean i am not dreaming." Yes, there are many things that can happen when doing an RC. Maybe next time youll actually come to the realization your in a dream. Hope this helps

Here's one thing that can help. If you are just doing mindless RC's throughout the day, they can become incorporated into your dreams, but you may not understand why you are doing them. Instead, when you practice RCs during the day, make sure to question reality along with it. For example, if I do an RC right now (I always try to breath with my nose plugged), I should also say to myself "How did I get here? Who have I talked to this morning? What else have I done today?"

Reality checks can fail during a dream, however if you ask those types of questions to yourself and you cannot answer them... then you are most likely dreaming.

      That means you were lucid!

It is common to think 'lucidity' means control. It doesn't, it just means you know you are dreaming.

However it didn't last long. This can be because of excitement, inexperience, something external waking you up, etc etc

Next time you find out you are dreaming, rub your hands together to stabilize the dream.

      Ooh, their breath is warm
      And they smell like sleep
And they say they take me home
      Like poppies heavy with seed
They take me deeper and deeper

My only time performing and attaining lucidity (awareness that you are dreaming within the dream not the actual control, that goes into different things to be able to practice within the lucid dream) my surroundings began going black as soon as I realized I was dreaming the same way you described. I tried so hard to remain in the dream. Also, my RC was checking my hands, as I'd heard people say hands always look different in dreams. At first, I almost thought "nope, this isn't a dream" because my hands almost looked normal, but upon closer inspection I realized there was a light sort of lilac light coming right from the center of the palm of my hands.

That's a very good idea. Just wondering. Whenever you asked those questions did answer them, and if so, did you do it before or after you did your RC?

A little trick I have learned over the years is visualizing the dream you just woke from.

Questioning reality is a seperate reality check. It will work on it's own, but it works expecially well when combining it with a physical RC, like plugging your nose and trying to breathe. I'll generally do the physical check, then question reality... and yes, I do answer the questions to myself.

For example, if I'm at work and go to the bathroom and do a RC. I plug my nose and try to breathe. I then think "is this a dream?" I remember I was just at my desk answering emails (at this point I know it's not a dream because I never remember how I got to where I was). I'll continue the exercise by saying to myself "I remember driving to work, I remember taking the dog out this morning" etc... If you get into this habit, it will be rare that a RC fails for you.
