It sounds to me like you need to tone down on the awareness, otherwise you won't go deeper. The same generally goes for visualisation; try to do it in a "dreamy" way without using mental force.

You could try remembering being there before, like it's a memory you're experiencing with all of your senses.

You could try being the main character of a videogame you have played, 1st-person perspective of course.

You could try visualising a movie you have seen many times, adding you to the cast.

From my experience visualisation comes easier if you can relate to it somehow, as it adds a familiar feeling and makes it less forced. Remember that you have to live the daydream, meaning you have to forget about your body in bed, you must lose perspective of time and you shouldn't think about what you are doing... just do it.
