That does sound akin to hypnagogia (after the daydreaming part) which is as you say is very unstable because once you 'notice' it then you sort of jolt awake. |

Try visualizing a set of random images as we dream and we imagine in the same area of the human brain. Also progressive muscle relaxation helps. |

That 'trip' you refer to (correct me if I'm mistaken) sounds like the 'hypnic jerk' which is a natural occurence as you are trying to go to sleep. It is often accompanied by a 'falling' sensation, etc. |
